WWE Rumors: Reviewing Top Buzz Following WrestleMania 39

Erik BeastonApr 3, 2023

On the heels of a monumental WrestleMania 39, the wrestling world is buzzing about the shocking conclusion of the main event in which Roman Reigns successfully retained his Undisputed WWE Universal Championship over Cody Rhodes.

What went into that match and when did the company know that it would not go ahead with the title change?

The details behind that match headline this collection of wrestling rumors and innuendo that also includes the latest on the Hell in a Cell match between Edge and Finn Balor, as well as what Dominik Mysterio's role will be long-term in WWE.

Details on Controversial Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns Main Event

1 of 3

Roman Reigns defeating Cody Rhodes in the main event of WrestleMania 39 took the wrestling world by surprise, thanks to a build that suggested The American Nightmare would capture the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship in a grand coronation.

As Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported, the fans may not have known that The Tribal Chief was retaining Sunday, but several behind the scenes knew well in advance.

"Now, we've confirmed that the plan for Reigns to emerge victorious was set and several people were aware of it several weeks ago." Sapp was unable to confirm when talent themselves knew.

"We can confirm that a lot of the interference elements weren't relayed to talent, refs and ringside staff until today, and the involvement of many parties were previously unknown," the report added.

Both Reigns and Chief Content Officer Triple H spoke on the controversial finish immediately following Sunday's show, promising there was more story to be told.

To say the finish of the match sucked the air out of SoFi Stadium Sunday night would be an understatement. Anticipation for the title change was at a fever pitch and when it did not come, the shock and awe was immediately apparent.

With that said, Reigns, Triple H, Paul Heyman and everyone involved with The Bloodline story has earned the benefit of the doubt. It is the deepest, most layered, best storyline WWE has produced, maybe since The Mega Powers exploded back in 1989.

It is epic storytelling and if there is at least a plan for the future, the outcome can be forgiven. Until then, WWE will have to rebuild faith with the audience to ensure them of that.

Update on How Finn Balor's Injury Affected Hell in a Cell Match vs. Edge

2 of 3

Finn Balor and Edge settled their months-long rivalry inside Hell in a Cell Sunday night, but the match did not go off quite as planned, thanks to an injury sustained by The Demon.

Midway through the bout, Edge threw a ladder at Balor, lacerating the top of his head and forcing a stoppage. As it turned out, the extent of the injury was worse than anyone watching at home knew.

Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com reported that WWE's medical crew injected Balor with a numbing agent before applying staples to the wound, all while Edge was busy pulling out weaponry for the rest of the match.

Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio reported that the match was cut short, which would explain the relatively quick turnaround from the referee stoppage to the finish.

It is a shame that the match was unable to reach the overall quality befitting two competitors of Edge and Balor's abilities because they appeared to be heading in a direction that would have produced an excellent match to add to the rest of the WrestleMania classics fans were treated to in suburban Los Angeles.

That it was the culmination of a storyline that was as long as it was, and did not have what one would consider an explosive finale, only accentuates the disappointment.

How WWE Views Dominik Mysterio

3 of 3

Dominik Mysterio enjoyed a star-making weekend in Los Angeles, despite losing the grudge match to his father, Hall of Famer, Rey.

According to Meltzer in The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the match with Rey was not a one-and-done scenario and management views the third-generation star as superstar heel of the future.

And they should.

Dominik developed into a despicable, hated heel since last August's betrayal of his father and was one-half of one of the hottest matches on this year's WrestleMania card.

He has a connection with the audience the likes of which others on the roster would do anything to forge. It is rare that someone as young and still relatively inexperienced as he is has managed to make the impact that he has.

The involvement of Bad Bunny at WrestleMania suggests the international music star is going to play into the program, which will only serve to elevate the young star's position in the company.

If his performance on the grand stage proved anything, it is that he is a generational star who is not adversely affected by pressure or heightened exposure. He will thrive moving forward and, barring any controversies or major injuries, should be one of the top stars of his era.

Something that may not have been said about him when he was a rather underdeveloped, generic babyface partnering with his legendary dad.
