WWE: Why Now Is the Perfect Time to Bring Back the Cruiserweight Championship

The Doctor Chris MuellerJun 6, 2018

Ever since WWE made the cruiserweight title defunct, there has been a void in WWE. For the few years before its demise the title was tossed from champion to champion without much storyline behind the changes.

WWE had lost most of their talent which fit in that division, and the champion, Hornswoggle, was doing nothing to keep the title prestigious.

Now WWE has a plethora of lightweight talent who could fill up the division and put on great matches. Even World Champion Daniel Bryan could compete for the title.

Guys like Justin Gabriel, Tyson Kidd, Tyler Black (when he debuts), Hunico, Epico, Primo, Sin Cara, Rey Mysterio and Heath Slater could all fight over the title.

WWE has made great strides in pushing wrestlers of all sizes over the past couple of years. Look at the current lineup of champions: CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Cody Rhodes, Dolph Ziggler, Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne. Not a single one of those guys is known for being buff or big. They are known for their wrestling style.

Most of those current champions would actually qualify for the cruiserweight title, and if WWE had top names competing for the title, it would keep its legitimacy instead of becoming a third-rate title like it did in the past.

Quick note, the video here is just entrances for the first 1:45, but then there is a solid 4:00 of great wrestling after, so skip ahead. It shows some of the best cruiserweight stuff from WCW.

WWE does not necessarily need another title, but it would not hurt to give some of the smaller guys who are not getting pushed something to fight over.

There is no denying that the cruiserweight matches of WCW were some of the most exciting on TV, and we have seen what two guys like Evan Bourne and Tyson Kidd can do in a match together.

Lots of WWE fans yearn for matches like what WCW used to have. La Parka, Juventud Guerrera, Eddie and Chavo Guerrero, Rey Mysterio and Psychosis used to set the screen on fire with their fast-paced, high-flying matches.

Stars from Mexico were not the only ones featured. Guys from the US, Japan and Europe were also prominent. Billy Kidman and Ultimo Dragon were top stars in the division as well.

Dean Malenko was one of the few standouts who did not rely on high-flying moves but rather mat-based and submission-wrestling techniques. This was also the first division that saw major success for Chris Jericho, who was also a great technical wrestler.

Malenko and Jericho had a memorable feud where Jericho claimed to be "The Man of 1,004 Holds" to anger Malenko, who was known as "The Man of 1,000 Holds."

Some of today's younger fan base has never been exposed to this kind of action. If there is anything little kids will like, it is guys who can fly around the ring like real-life superheroes.

Rey Mysterio is hugely popular, and WWE can make more young high-flyers popular if they push them properly and give them their own title to fight for.

David vs. Goliath is a storyline which has been done to death, but we don't often see two Davids duking it out for supremacy anymore.

Even World Champion Daniel Bryan is facing guys who more than double him in weight and strength. If WWE booked the title as more than just a token championship, then it could be something that could provide endless excitement.

There is really no downside to bringing the title back as long as they don't just ignore it during pay-per-view cards and storyline development.

What do you think: Would bringing back a cruiserweight title help WWE?
