A Way-Too-Early Look at the Post-WWE WrestleMania 39 Landscape
WrestleMania 39 is rapidly approaching. The two-night event across April 1 and 2 will chart a fresh course for the company's future.
While we do not know yet what will happen, WWE is clearly moving in certain directions to revitalize divisions that need a real shake-up.
Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes will battle for the Undisputed Universal Championship and the future of the company.
Raw women's champion Bianca Belair will face a new and dangerous Asuka, while SmackDown women's champion Charlotte puts her title on the line against longtime rival Rhea Ripley.
Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens may not be yet on the same page, but they could be the ones to end The Usos's reign of terror in the tag team division.
Gunther and Austin Theory lack clear challengers yet, but signs point to Drew McIntyre and John Cena as the men who could dethrone them.
What matters most is what will come of the results. What will WWE look like after WrestleMania 39? The following is an early projection of the WWE to come.
New Undisputed World Champion: Cody Rhodes
1 of 6It is not a certainty that Roman Reigns will lose the Undisputed Universal Championship, but if it isn't Cody Rhodes, who can ever stop The Tribal Chief?
Assuming The American Nightmare gets his due, WWE will look very different after WrestleMania. Rhodes is still fairly new to the company following his return. Outside of Rhodes' one consistent rival, Seth "Freakin" Rollins, the new possibilities are endless.
Reigns has been a good champion but also frequently takes weeks off at a time. Rhodes will be a constant presence who can give everyone from Bobby Lashley and Austin Theory on Raw to Drew McIntyre and Sami Zayn on SmackDown a title shot.
It is likely that Rhodes will ultimately break up the world titles, giving SmackDown a separate world champion while he remains Raw's top man. This will give WWE a fresh opportunity to truly revitalize the world title scene.
Without the titles, Reigns will still remain an invaluable part of SmackDown for a long time to come. It should be interesting to see what The Tribal Chief will do when he is not standing atop the mountain for the first time in years.
New Raw and SmackDown Women's Champions: Asuka and Rhea Ripley
2 of 6The women's division is ready for a shake-up, and it will begin with two new women's champions.
Bianca Belair has been a great Raw women's champion for the past year, but her time could be up against Asuka. Charlotte Flair has not been SmackDown women's champion for long but is still set to pave the way for Rhea Ripley's rise.
Asuka has found a new attitude with a fresh coat of paint—she is scarier than ever but still the same great in-ring performer—while Ripley has never been more engaging after finding her voice in The Judgment Day. When she wins the gold, she could become an unstoppable force for the blue brand.
Hopefully, these new champions will open up the opportunity for fresh challengers and matchups.
Asuka can face Raquel Rodriguez, Mia Yim, Candice LeRae and Piper Niven, to name a few. Ripley has many interesting rivals to explore, such as Ronda Rousey, Sonya Deville, Nikki Cross and especially Becky Lynch.
The women's division will do well once new dynamics are established. The female talent can reach another level with these champions at the helm.
New Raw and SmackDown Tag Team Champions: Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn
3 of 6The Usos have been tag team champions in WWE for longer than any other duo in wrestling history, but the time is just about up for Jimmy and Jey Uso as tag team champions.
All signs point to Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens dethroning The Usos. The two have never won tag team gold but were partners even before coming to WWE.
This is a special team that can help revitalize the division, though it will be important to eventually break up the championships between Raw and SmackDown.
WWE has many great teams. New Day, Street Profits, Judgment Day, Imperium, Brawling Brutes, The O.C., Viking Raiders, Alpha Academy, Legado del Fantasma, The Hurt Business and Hit Row are all established teams, with more possible to form soon.
This is a division loaded with interesting teams. KO and Zayn can face the best and brightest in fresh matches for months to come before the divisions separate between SmackDown and Raw moving forward.
New United States Champion: John Cena
4 of 6Austin Theory has done good work as United States champion to date, but his next challenger could be his last. John Cena is likely to be returning to face the champion and possibly win his sixth United States Championship.
Cena has other responsibilities beyond WWE, though, so he is not a long-term solution. If he wins the gold, he can bring the United States Championship open challenge back to bring in a fresh challenger.
Many NXT stars are likely to come up to Raw or SmackDown soon, including Bron Breakker and/or Carmelo Hayes, Grayson Waller and Cameron Grimes. Any of them could be the one to beat Cena. There is even the potential for a debuting Jay White or Kota Ibushi to take gold on their first night in the company.
Beyond them, there is a wealth of talent to challenge for the United States Championship, assuming a WWE Draft is on the horizon.
New faces in the U.S. Championship scene could include Braun Strowman, Bronson Reed, Dexter Lumis, Elias, Johnny Gargano, Sheamus and Shinsuke Nakamura.
Theory, meanwhile, could begin to rise up to the main event scene following a short but memorable feud with Cena.
Dominant Intercontinental Champion: Gunther
5 of 6Gunther has looked unstoppable since he won the Intercontinental Championship. His feud with Sheamus was one of the best stories WWE put together all year, and his run in the men's Royal Rumble far outshone anyone else in a stacked field.
The Ring General looks to be gearing up for a feud with Drew McIntyre into WrestleMania, which could be his toughest fight to date. However, Gunther needs the title more than The Scottish Warrior.
The wealth of challengers for Gunther is endless. He still has yet to fight Sami Zayn, Solo Sikoa, Karrion Kross, Santos Escobar and LA Knight. Add in a possible WWE Draft that could bring in Bobby Lashley, Dolph Ziggler, Bronson Reed and even Seth Rollins, and there's a clear pathway for Gunther's reign to continue.
The Ring General could go another year or more atop the SmackDown midcard, and it will never get boring watching him chop down all comers.
New WWE Women's Tag Team Championships: Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler
6 of 6The women's tag team division has been in shambles for a while despite having quality champions. Dakota Kai and IYO SKY have carried the Women's Tag Team Championships with pride, but they've lacked credible challengers.
As WWE moves toward WrestleMania, many new tag teams are forming, but it seems like they are all waiting for a new team to emerge as champions. Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler are the only team set up to take on the array of new pairs.
Whether they face Damage CTRL, Becky Lynch and Lita or another team altogether in the last-minute WrestleMania shuffle, The Baddest Woman on the Planet and The Queen of Spades will defeat them.
This can reshuffle a division with new and potential tag teams that include: Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez, Natalya and Shotzi, Candice LeRae and Mia Yim, Nikki Cross and Piper Niven and Sonya Deville and Chelsea Green.
There is no reason why WWE cannot ramp up this division, but they must keep these alliances clear rather than shifting partners too much.
