Buying or Selling Speculated Matches for WWE WrestleMania 39 Card

Graham GSM MatthewsFeb 23, 2023

With Elimination Chamber officially done, WWE fans' sights are firmly set on WrestleMania 39 and the blockbuster bouts it's bound to have in store.

Three matches are set in stone for The Show of Shows coming out of Chamber: Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, Charlotte Flair vs. Rhea Ripley for the SmackDown Women's Championship, and Bianca Belair vs. Asuka for the Raw Women's Championship.

A mere five weeks remain until the event, which gives WWE an ample amount of time to confirm the rest of the card for April 1-2 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

Thankfully, seeds have already been planted for many contests dating back to the Royal Rumble. Certain teased matchups are quite random and aren't overly appealing on paper, while others make perfect storyline sense and have been brewing for a while.

The two-night formula allows WWE to put together a compelling lineup and utilize a majority of the loaded roster without going overboard.

The following nine matches are all rumored for WrestleMania, but whether they're worth buying or selling on is ultimately up to the audience.

Buying: Seth Rollins vs. Logan Paul

1 of 9

Seth Rollins has long been pitched as an exciting opponent for Logan Paul, and it appears that marquee match will finally take place at WrestleMania 39.

Paul returned from injury at the Royal Rumble and made an enemy out of The Visionary by eliminating him from the men's match. He doubled down by attacking him at Elimination Chamber and costing him the United States Championship against Austin Theory.

Rollins has been involved in attraction matches at 'Mania for the last few years and an encounter with the YouTuber is certainly worthy of the WrestleMania stage. WWE has effectively established an issue between the two to ensure a title isn't needed to make their match meaningful.

Most importantly, it will have the proper dynamic with Rollins as the babyface and Paul as the heel. The social media star has proved to be a natural antagonist during his time in WWE and will undoubtedly have another stellar performance when he shares the ring with one of the best in the business.

Buying: Edge vs. Finn Bálor in a Hell in a Cell Match

2 of 9

It was made quite clear at the end of Monday's edition of Raw that the bad blood between Edge and Finn Bálor isn't over yet.

Edge has been consistently involved with The Judgment Day in some form or fashion since the stable's inception at WrestleMania 38. He recruited Damian Priest and Rhea Ripely to join his side before being betrayed by Bálor last June.

The Rated-R Superstar has gone back and forth with the devious group for the past six months. He lost his "I Quit" battle with the Irishman at Extreme Rules but beat him and Ripley in a mixed tag team match last weekend at Elimination Chamber.

WrestlingNews.co reported in December that the two were slated to collide in a Hell in a Cell match at the Royal Rumble. Although that didn't happen, it was presumably pushed back until WrestleMania, which is a better place for the payoff of the program.

Regardless of who wins, it's encouraging to see Bálor being a part of a prominent match on the 'Mania card this year after being left off last year's installment.

Buying: Austin Theory vs. John Cena for the United States Championship

3 of 9

As previously noted, Austin Theory escaped Elimination Chamber still the United States champion. He was also able to successfully retain the title against Edge on the subsequent edition of Raw thanks to outside assistance from Finn Bálor.

The next name on Theory's hit list is John Cena, who he took exception to returning to Raw in two weeks during a backstage segment on Monday night. That match has been in the works for WrestleMania since at least last June after an interaction they had backstage at The Cenation Leader's anniversary show.

What makes this contest more interesting is that the U.S. title will likely be on the line, assuming Theory doesn't drop it before then. Although it's not necessary, Cena has ties to the belt after the success he had with the weekly U.S. Open Challenge years ago.

That may make the outcome more predictable since Cena's busy schedule wouldn't allow him to hold gold for long, but either way, it's a major spot for Theory at WWE's biggest show of the year.

With a win over Cena, the stock of both Theory and the star-spangled prize would be instantly elevated.

Selling: Brock Lesnar vs. Omos

4 of 9

During Monday's Raw, MVP declared that Omos intends to challenge Brock Lesnar to a match at WrestleMania. The Beast Incarnate will be on next week's Raw to respond.

There was immediate outrage from fans online, and understandably so. Lesnar is one of the biggest stars on the WWE roster, whereas Omos has had a gradual fall from grace since suffering his first singles defeat at WrestleMania 38.

Fans speculated that it could be a red herring, but that may not be the case after all. Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio felt it was "obvious" WWE was going in the direction of Lesnar vs. Omos as well as Bobby Lashley vs. Bray Wyatt.

If true, then that would be a colossal waste of Lesnar at WrestleMania. It's refreshing he won't be involved in a world title match at the event for the first time since 2016, but there's no reason for his feud with Lashley to be cut short before it can have a definitive conclusion.

Getting The Beast involved in whatever WWE has planned with Lashley and Wyatt would be a much smarter use of him.

Selling: Bobby Lashley vs. Bray Wyatt

5 of 9

Bray Wyatt's strange storyline with Uncle Howdy never had a proper payoff. He defeated LA Knight at the Royal Rumble before Howdy threw himself off a platform onto Knight down below, but it was never explained what significance that was supposed to have.

The next we saw Wyatt and Howdy, they were aligned on the Feb. 17 edition of SmackDown, fighting off Hit Row. Wyatt then put the winner of Lashley vs. Lesnar at Elimination Chamber on notice, despite having little to no history with either of them.

The All Mighty beat Lesnar by disqualification at the event, so as of now, that must mean Lashley vs. Wyatt is the WrestleMania match, especially if Lesnar vs. Omos is happening. That's only marginally more intriguing than Lesnar vs. Omos.

While fresh, Wyatt vs. Lashley has no story at the moment, and their styles may not mesh all that well. It also puts whatever Wyatt was doing with Uncle Howdy on the backburner and therefore renders the last four months a waste of time.

Wyatt doing anything with Lashley and/or Lesnar feels forced, but a Triple Threat with the three behemoths (sans Omos) would be a much stronger alternative.

Selling: Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler vs. Damage CTRL for Women's Tag Titles

6 of 9

The WWE Women's Tag Team Championships have largely been an afterthought since they were reintroduced in August. Damage CTRL's Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky have dominated the division as titleholders but haven't had many defenses of the belts.

They'll put the gold up for grabs against Becky Lynch and Lita next week on Raw. Not only can the contest go either way, but it should also determine what the WrestleMania match is going to be and who will be involved.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that Damage CTRL defending against Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler was considered "locked in" for the event. That would pit two heel teams against each other, so the audience wouldn't have any incentive to cheer for either of them.

Lynch teaming with Lita and a returning Trish Stratus to take on all of Damage CTRL at The Show of Shows would be a bigger bout. It's possible that happens on Night 1 as well as a multi-team No. 1 Contender's match for the tag titles, where the winners face Kai and Sky on Night 2.

Lynch and Lita vs. Rousey and Baszler shouldn't be written off completely, either. The only issue with that match is that Bayley wouldn't factor into the equation, and she should after missing 'Mania the last two years.

Buying: Rey Mysterio vs. Dominik Mysterio

7 of 9

The story of a father not wanting to wrestle his son has been told before in WWE with brother pairings Bret and Owen Hart, Jeff and Matt Hardy, and The Undertaker and Kane (in kayfabe, of course), but it has been executed exceptionally well with Rey and Dominik Mysterio so far.

Dominik shockingly double-crossed his dad at Clash at the Castle in September and joined The Judgment Day soon after. Rey refused to fight back and eventually departed for SmackDown to avoid the animosity.

The storyline has been subtly furthered in the months since, including at the Royal Rumble when it was implied that Dominik prevented Rey from participating in the men's match. Additionally, Dom has ruined his father's Thanksgiving, Christmas and Valentine's Day holidays by routinely crashing family gatherings.

Dominik mentioned on Monday's Raw he plans to accompany Rhea Ripley to SmackDown on Friday, so that should be where they rekindle their rivalry.

Santos Escobar could team with Rey, while Dominik pairs with Damian Priest to make it a tag team match, but a singles contest would be ideal.

Buying: Gunther vs. Sheamus vs. Drew McIntyre for the Intercontinental Championship

8 of 9

With the historic Intercontinental Championship run he finds himself on at the moment, Gunther deserves a high-profile match at WrestleMania.

He's overcome every obstacle put in front of him throughout his reign, though it was Sheamus who came the closest to dethroning him at September's Clash at the Castle event. He again defeated The Celtic Warrior in a rematch on SmackDown one month later.

For years, Sheamus has expressed a strong desire to become WWE's ultimate Grand Slam champion, and that goal can't be completed until he captures the gold Gunther currently has in his possession. It's the definition of a WrestleMania moment.

The Irishman besting The Ring General in a third and final match at 'Mania would be tremendous, but adding Drew McIntyre to the mix to make it a Triple Threat would hardly hinder the match quality.

McIntyre and Gunther have mostly been kept apart and would have stellar chemistry together. The Scot and Sheamus have been teaming for a few months now, so all it would take is a No. 1 Contender's match between them ending in a draw to set this up.

Buying: The Usos vs. Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn for the Undisputed Tag Team Titles

9 of 9

The Sami Zayn saga has been beautifully handled for the last year, and the time has come for it be blown off in grand fashion.

Following his failure to dethrone Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at Elimination Chamber, Zayn attempted to reconcile with Kevin Owens this week on Raw. KO declined his offer to aid him in his war with The Bloodline, but their reunion is inevitable.

That will be a monumental moment once it happens, setting the stage for an epic clash with The Usos for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships on The Grandest Stage of Them All.

Jimmy and Jey have had a stranglehold on the titles since the summer of 2021, and the duo of Zayn and Owens are the right team to end their lengthy reign. An argument can be made for it headlining Night 1 because of how spectacular the story has been up to this point.

Between Zayn and Owens finally reforming their friendship and Jey Uso having to make a definitive choice regarding where his allegiance lies, the next several weeks worth of television will be must-see.
