5 Reasons Why WWE WrestleMania 39 Could Be an All-Timer
WrestleMania 39 will take place on April 1 and 2 from the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. With the way things have been going, this show has the potential to be one of the best 'Manias we have seen in years.
While Covid-19 is still part of our lives, the restrictions of the pandemic feel like a distant memory. Tens of thousands of fans are going to pack into that stadium on each night to see the men and women of WWE do what they do best.
We already know of three matches that will take place at the marquee event, but with two nights to fill, WWE has a big card to put together.
Roman Reigns will defend the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Cody Rhodes, Bianca Belair will put the Raw women's title on the line against Asuka, and Rhea Ripley will challenge Charlotte Flair for the SmackDown Women's Championship.
Several other matches seem likely given current storylines, so we can make a few guesses along the way. Let's take a look at why this year's WrestleMania could be an all-time great event.
The Bar for Celebrity Wrestling Has Been Raised
1 of 5Ever since the first WrestleMania, celebrity involvement has been part of the deal with the event. Whether it's someone simply singing the national anthem or a famous actor wrestling a full match, WWE is open to all of it.
In the past, celebrity contests have been widely used for comedic purposes. A recent example is Johnny Knoxville vs. Sami Zayn. That bout was nothing more than ridiculous joke spots, but the crowd loved it.
Going back a bit further to WrestleMania 25, the quick exchange between Mickey Rourke and Chris Jericho was only meant to pop the crowd.
However, we have also seen a lot of celebs taking it more seriously when they work a match. Stars such as Stephen Amell, Bad Bunny and Logan Paul have all surprised us by putting on entertaining performances alongside the Superstars of WWE.
Paul is somebody who will likely be involved with this year's show given the events that took place at Elimination Chamber on Saturday. With Seth Rollins looking for revenge, a singles match between the two of them is all but a lock.
The social media star has impressed critics with each appearance he has made, so WWE is obviously happy to keep bringing him back. With a pro like Rollins as his opponent, this will probably end up being the best match Paul has had yet.
Several Titles Will Probably Change Hands
2 of 5We already know of three titles that are guaranteed to be defended at WrestleMania. With easy storylines in place for the rest of the belts, there is a good chance we are going to see every championship being defended on this card.
Reigns vs. Rhodes, Belair vs. Asuka and Flair vs. Ripley are the contests we already know will take place. Let's look at where every other champion stands.
Austin Theory has been talking about John Cena a lot in recent weeks, and with the Peacemaker star set to appear on Raw in less than two weeks, it seems certain these two will clash over the United States Championship.
Over on SmackDown, Gunther has been dominant during his reign as intercontinental champion. With stars like Sheamus, Drew McIntyre, Madcap Moss, Ricochet and Braun Strowman all keeping their eye on the champ, there are numerous possible challengers waiting to fight for the belt.
The Usos are definitely going to be defending one or both sets of tag titles at the show. If Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens can find common ground again, they may end up being the ones who face the brothers.
Lastly, Damage CTRL have been in a feud with Becky Lynch for some time, and with Lita entering the picture, we appear to have our next feud for the women's tag titles set.
While the probability of every belt changing hands is low, there is a good chance we see more than half of these titles find new homes at WrestleMania. Title changes always add excitement to any big event, so let's hope WWE spaces them out accordingly.
Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns
3 of 5WrestleMania hasn't been sold around just one match in many years, but there is no denying that the main attraction this year is Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns.
Ever since The American Nightmare returned at The Show of Shows last year, he has been crystal clear that his goal is to hold the world title that eluded his father, Dusty Rhodes.
Right now, the former All Elite Wrestling vice president is one of the most "over" stars on the entire roster. Whenever he makes an appearance, the WWE Universe goes wild. People happily sing along with his song and always give him a warm welcome.
Reigns, on the other hand, is the ultimate heel. Even though most fans think he is great at what he does, he is always able to generate the boos he needs.
Pro wrestling is at its best when it has a lovable babyface and a despicable heel in the main event. WrestleMania 39 is going to give us a great matchup between two men who are at the top of their game. You can't ask for much more from a main event.
Good Use of Part-Time Acts
4 of 5The use of part-time Superstars has been a point of debate in the WWE Universe for years, but it's hard to argue with the logic behind bringing in some big names to perform on The Grandest Stage of Them All.
Here is a list of the part-time Superstars who appear to be a lock for this year's show:
- Brock Lesnar
- John Cena
- Edge
- Lita
On top of that, you could almost consider Reigns to be a part-timer at this point. He doesn't appear on TV every week and worked less than a dozen matches last year.
Lesnar and Bobby Lashley seem destined for another showdown, Edge will likely face Finn Bálor or Damian Priest, Lita and Becky Lynch are chasing the women's tag team titles, and Cena could end up in a match against Theory.
For once, it feels like WWE is using all of its part-time stars to their fullest potential.
WWE Wants to Seem Appealing to Potential Buyers
5 of 5If Vince McMahon is going to sell WWE in the near future, then he is going to want to make sure the company looks as appealing as possible, and that means putting on the best show money can buy.
This means WWE is going to go all out trying to make this as much of a spectacle as possible. In addition to the usual high-quality action, we will probably see plenty of pyrotechnics, some musical performances and maybe even some surprises.
Management is going to want a sell-out crowd to have plenty of reasons to cheer, so we can also expect plenty of favorable booking decisions to be made.
WWE will bring in as many celebrity friends as it can, some legends will definitely be involved somehow, and a few rising stars might make names for themselves at the event.
All of this will help give the perception to prospective buyers that WWE is a thriving business worth the asking price. The company always goes all-out for this show, but this year might be slightly more important from a business standpoint.
