It came exactly one year after Brady said goodbye last time, on Feb. 1, 2022, in a heartfelt message on Instagram. The retirement lasted less than two months before he announced his decision to return on March 13.

Fans who won't get fooled again questioned whether the latest announcement was genuine:

It's clear fans will keep a close eye on the superstar over the next few months.

Of course, a major difference is that the 2022 season was mostly a disaster for Brady and the Buccaneers.

In 2021, Brady finished second in MVP voting while leading the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns. Tampa Bay went 13-4 and remained a legitimate contender to win another Super Bowl. He returned to a team that had plenty of optimism heading into 2022.

Expectations were not a reality as the Bucs finished 8-9 before a blowout loss to the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of the playoffs. Brady's numbers dropped significantly across the board, with his 52.5 Total QBR his lowest since counting began in 2006.

After fulfilling his contract with the Buccaneers, it's seemingly a more reasonable time to step away.

As many have pointed out, however, we'll believe it when we see it.
