3 WWE Superstars Who Could Dethrone Roman Reigns Besides The Rock
Roman Reigns has been dominating the main event scene in WWE for the past three years, and he is the current undisputed universal champion after having unified the two top championships at WrestleMania 38.
His run has been historic in many ways, but everything comes to an end eventually. Unless WWE plans to have him surpass Bruno Sammartino's longest reign, there is a good chance The Tribal Chief won't make it through 2023 without losing the belts.
Being the person to end such a monumental reign is going to give somebody a massive push, so WWE has to choose who that is very carefully.
The Rock has been rumored to face Reigns at some point for the past couple of years, so naturally, some fans assume he will be the person who finally takes the champ down.
But there are a lot of other choices that would make more sense. Let's look at some of the best options to take the Undisputed Universal Championship from around the waist of The Tribal Chief.
Jey Uso
1 of 3If WWE wanted to bring one of the best long-term storylines in WWE full circle, the man to take down Reigns would be Jey Uso.
All of this Bloodline stuff started with the two of them. When Jey was running solo because Jimmy was out with an injury, Reigns beat him repeatedly until he fell in line. Their battles at Clash of Champions and Hell in a Cell in 2020 were both classics, but they were also decisive wins for The Tribal Chief.
Once Jey chose to work with Reigns instead of against him, the faction began to form. Jimmy joined his brother alongside their cousin when he was able to compete again, and they were eventually followed by Sami Zayn and Solo Sikoa.
Throughout all of it, Jey has never seemed content. He has always been the angriest member of the group, and Zayn has been the outlet for his rage until recently. But there is still that feeling that Jey could snap at any moment and walk away from his family.
Reigns has defeated just about every main event talent in WWE, some more than once. At this point, having one of the few people the champion trusts be the one who finally ends his run would be one of the most satisfying ways to finish this story.
Not only would it give Jey a massive singles push and turn him into one of the top babyfaces in the company, but it would open the door for him to feud with Jimmy if he were to remain loyal to The Tribal Chief. Who doesn't love a good brother vs. brother feud in pro wrestling?
Jey is probably the least likely person on this list to actually take the belts from Reigns, but it would be one of the most satisfying conclusions to any long-term storyline in WWE history.
Sami Zayn
2 of 3The Honorary Uce felt like he just wanted to ride the coattails of The Tribal Chief when he first began hanging around The Bloodline. He seemed like he was destined to be discarded once Reigns grew tired of him, but he has made himself invaluable and helped his Tribal Chief retain his title on more than one occasion.
But we all know how this is going to end. Eventually, Reigns and the rest of The Bloodline will probably turn on Zayn after he lets them down one time, and that will immediately make the 38-year-old into one of the most sympathetic babyfaces in all of WWE.
While his actions have been that of a heel, there is no denying how beloved Zayn has become over the past couple of years. He is an incredible worker, a comedian capable of getting laughs out of the most jaded fans, and he has always shown more of a desire to belong than a desire to be bad.
We can all relate to that feeling of wanting to be part of a group or a community. Even the most introverted of us longs for some kind of connection, and all Zayn has ever wanted during this whole storyline is to be seen as a member of the family. Now that he has that, the only direction this story can go is to take it away from him.
Zayn's friendship with Kevin Owens has had more ups and downs than just about any other relationship in WWE history, but this time is different. Zayn is now the one who has betrayed his longtime friend, but he has never done it with much of a smile. There has always been some kind of hesitation or confusion when Zayn has been forced to choose between KO and Reigns.
Now that The Honorary Uce has seemingly cemented his status in The Bloodline, it's going to make his ousting that much more heartbreaking. Once that happens, WWE will have a golden opportunity to capitalize on his potential to be one of the most organically popular babyfaces in the company.
Being an underdog against The Tribal Chief is one thing, but Zayn's connection to the WWE Universe could make him as popular as Bryan Danielson was at the height of the Yes Movement.
Kevin Owens
3 of 3Jey and Zayn are both great options because they are currently aligned with Reigns, but one man who has always stood against The Bloodline is The Prize Fighter.
Owens has had some multiple awesome matches against every member of The Bloodline over the years, with Sikoa being the lone exception because of his recent arrival on the scene. If anyone could be considered the single-biggest rival of the group, it's KO.
Throughout his reign, The Tribal Chief has had to rely a lot on The Usos, Sikoa and Zayn to keep the Undisputed Universal Championship, but Owens arguably came closer than anyone to dethroning the champ, and that makes him a prime candidate to be the one who finally gets the job done.
Brock Lesnar and Drew McIntyre are also among Reigns' biggest rivals, but neither of them has the everyman quality that Owens possesses to give them a natural connection to the WWE Universe. The Beast and The Scottish Warrior look like superheroes, so it's a little harder to relate to them.
Not only is Owens more accessible, but he is better on the mic and has a track record of being able to put on great matches against any kind of opponent. It doesn't matter if he is fighting a cruiserweight like Rey Mysterio or a powerhouse like Sheamus. He is going to put on a great show every single time.
KO has also been one of the most reliable performers in the entire company for a long time. If you need a babyface who can pop the crowd with every promo, you call Owens. If you need a heel who can make an entire arena boo with a single insult, you call Owens. He can be put into any storyline as the protagonist or antagonist, and he is going to knock it out of the park every single time.
The Prize Fighter is the polar opposite of Reigns in almost every way, and that is one of the biggest reasons why he would be the perfect choice to take him down.
These three men are already positioned in a way that would allow them to pay off long-term storylines by defeating The Tribal Chief, but everybody has their pick when it comes to stuff like this. Who do you think should be the next undisputed universal champion?
