Oklahoma State in the 2010 Alamo Bowl: My Favorite Cowboys' Bowl Memory
My favorite Oklahoma State Cowboys bowl game is actually last year’s Alamo Bowl. It was a big step in the program, as it was the team’s school record 11th win.
I’ve been an Oklahoma State fan since I was a baby. I have proof actually, a picture of a fat baby wearing a Pistol Pete shirt. My father went there, my grandpa went there when it was Oklahoma A&M, and many others in my family went there.
As a fan base, we’ve been through a lot of heartache and struggle. Before this season, last year had been the best year in school history, which is what makes last year’s Alamo Bowl so special.
The Cowboys faced off against Arizona, who appeared to be overmatched considering that the Wildcats were a 7-5 team facing off against a 10-2 squad. The game supported that feeling.
The Cowboys jumped out to a 10-point lead after the first quarter, and extended that lead to 23-7 with a Markelle Martin interception return for a touchdown before halftime.
In the second half, the Cowboys outscored Arizona 13-3, leading up to a 36-10 win.
The signature moment that I remember most was Justin Blackmon’s 71-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter. The then-sophomore ran all along the goal line before finally stepping into the end zone untouched.
I think it stood out the most because most of us were scolding him for showing off. We also weren’t sure if he was coming back this season, so I think we were paying particular attention to him in case it was his last game.
It was an important game because it was their 11th win, and it probably has acted as a jump off point for an even more impressive season this year. It has been over 20 years since they had won double-digit games in a season. Now they have finally pushed over 10 wins for the first time.
Of course, Brandon Weeden and Blackmon ended up coming back. This season has the potential to top that one with a win over Stanford for a school record 12th win. Hopefully, my favorite Cowboy bowl memory will be a new one after January 2.
