Astros vs. Phillies: Latest World Series 2022 Predictions and Odds

Joe TanseyNov 4, 2022

The Houston Astros took control of the 2022 World Series in Games 4 and 5 with dominant pitching performances.

The combined no-hitter, led by Cristian Javier, against the Philadelphia Phillies flipped the momentum in favor of the American League champion after Game 4.

Justin Verlander picked up his first-ever World Series victory in Game 5 with a solid showing on the mound that was followed up by yet another impressive bullpen outing.

Houston carries a 3-2 lead back home for Saturday's Game 6, and it just needs one win in the next two games to win its second title in six years.

Philadelphia needs to rediscover its offense after being held to two runs in the last 18 innings. The Phillies showed some life at the end of Game 5, but they were unable to push multiple runs across against the Houston bullpen.

Framber Valdez Turns in Another Impressive Outing

Houston could not have asked for a better scenario to come home and clinch the World Series.

Framber Valdez has been arguably the Astros' best pitcher all season long, and he gets the ball on Saturday night.

Valdez contained the Phillies lineup in Game 2, as he conceded one run on four hits in 6.1 innings.

The Houston left-hander produced back-to-back nine-strikeout games in Game 2 of the ALCS and Game 2 of the World Series.

Valdez conceded three earned runs over 19 innings in three starts this postseason, and there is a good chance he adds to his resume and gets into the running for Most Valuable Player.

Philadelphia's hitters had trouble with Houston's starters in Games 4 and 5. Kyle Schwarber's solo home run off Justin Verlander was the only run that the National League champion got off a Houston starter in the last two games.

Valdez should be able to continue his high level of dominance on the mound and extend the high standard that the Astros starters set during their two wins in Philadelphia.

Phillies Turn to Ranger Suárez in Game 6

The Phillies have to use every pitching strategy possible just to stay alive and force a Game 7.

That approach could force Rob Thomson into using Ranger Suárez one day earlier than expected in Houston.

Thomson utilized Suárez twice in relief this postseason. He was used in relief in Game 1 and started Game 3 after a rain out pushed the schedule back by a day. Suárez was originally scheduled to start Game 4.

Philadelphia could run into a pitching issue if Zack Wheeler is unable to keep the Astros bats at bay in Game 6.

Wheeler allowed five runs, conceded six hits and walked three batters in Game 2. The uncharacteristic start could carry over into Game 6, where the Phillies have to have a short leash with their pitchers.

Suárez is scheduled to start Game 7, but the Phillies may need him to shift the tide of Game 6 to stay in the series if Wheeler struggles, or if they need a dominant arm to throw in one spot.

Thomson has been aggressive with his pitching moves throughout the postseason, and that could lead to Suárez appearing one day earlier than usual to keep the Phillies' season alive.
