Virginia vs. Auburn: Are the Virginia Orange Uniforms Good or Terrible?
Virginia unleashed its orange fury tonight against Auburn in the Chick-fil-A Bowl donning orange jerseys and helmets.
The Cavaliers have not worn orange helmets since the late 1960s, and they were looking to provide a bit of inspiration to their team and fans with a change to the uniforms.
The Cavaliers stepped out of the norm looking to utilize their team colors as much as possible for the game. The helmets are what takes this uniform option over the top. The orange top definitely is an eye catcher, but it quickly turns into an eye sore before too watching for too long.
It almost brings a street cone appeal to the game making the Cavaliers appear more hazardous than their offense has been so far in this game. The Cavaliers share their orange and blue colors with the Auburn Tigers as the Tigers' first coach, a Virginia graduate, chose to place his alma mater’s colors on his newly formed team.
It's tough to look into the stands and distinguish between the two fan groups, but on the field, there's no question where the Virginia players are located.
There's also a strange swashbuckling-style, slashed orange striping that appears on the trousers of the Cavaliers. Again, sticking to tradition would have been a better move for the Cavaliers when it comes to the pants.
Usually these uniform changeups look pretty cool, but Virginia may have taken things over the top with this orange ensemble. The Cavaliers could have taken to their traditional white tops and blue helmets, and the matchup would have looked much more pleasing to the eyes.
Wearing the orange jerseys from time to time is an OK shakeup for the Cavaliers to bring, but the helmets should be left at the door.
I wouldn’t expect a return to the orange shells anytime in the near future for the Cavaliers football team.
