Titles Most Likely to Change Hands at WWE Extreme Rules 2022

Anthony MangoOct 5, 2022

The focal point of WWE Extreme Rules 2022 is the variety of gimmick matches and stipulations, rather than a major shift in titles changing hands.

In fact, most of the championships aren't even going to be defended at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Saturday night.

Nevertheless, any pay-per-view presents the possibility for a title switch, and Extreme Rules may well see at least one champion dethroned.

Let's assess the title scene heading into the PPV to judge which belts may end up in the possession of a new Superstar by the end of the night.

Championships Essentially Guaranteed Safe

Anything can happen in professional wrestling and the card is always subject to change, so nothing is a 100 percent certainty. Impromptu matches could be added to the lineup, Austin Theory could cash in his Money in the Bank contract, and any number of other things could throw fans for a loop.

However, most titles in WWE aren't advertised to be defended on Saturday, meaning they are as certain to stay in the grasp of their current champions as can be.

For example, Gunther is wrestling in a six-man tag team match that could see him take a beating from The Brawling Brutes, but his intercontinental belt is not on the line.

The Bloodline hold both sets of tag team titles and the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, but Roman Reigns and The Usos aren't scheduled to compete at Extreme Rules.

Bobby Lashley has had numerous United States title defenses without a solid feud that was dedicated to him. Currently, Seth Rollins is his main enemy, but The Visionary has to get past Matt Riddle first. Even if a random challenger were to get a title shot added to this card, The All Mighty would assuredly defeat him since the Rollins match is coming up.

Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky have no title defense advertised for the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship, either. If they appear at all, it will likely be to interfere in Bayley's Raw Women's Championship shot.

And the 24/7 Championship has only been seen at house shows lately. WWE won't be dedicating any time to it this weekend, so Dana Brooke is safe.

Slight Chance: Raw Women's Championship

Bayley knows what it takes to get to the top of the women's division, having won her fair share of titles. With Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky by her side, as well as the "anything goes" nature of ladder matches, there is a chance she will leave Extreme Rules with the Raw Women's Championship.

However, just because it can happen doesn't mean it will.

Damage CTRL interfering would be a big boost to Bayley's chances. All it takes is a distraction or someone holding Bianca Belair down while The Role Model climbs the ladder and a new champion would be crowned.

The EST of WWE has even more allies than Bayley, though. Alexa Bliss, Asuka, Aliyah, Shotzi and Raquel Rodriguez have all developed a disdain for the women's tag team champions. If Sky and Kai try to interfere, they could be met with a five-on-two fight.

If Bayley wins the title, it is likely the ladder match stipulation was added specifically so Belair wouldn't have to take another pinfall or submit in order to lose the belt. That way, she maintains credibility despite the loss. But a much safer bet is that The EST will retain.

Bayley's pin over Belair at Clash at the Castle in a non-title situation means considerably less than The EST's dominant streak in 2022, which should continue into WrestleMania 39 season.

Strong Chance: SmackDown Women's Championship

Liv Morgan has proved herself to be a fighter after years of clawing her away to the SmackDown Women's Championship. It's been great to see her achieve her childhood dream.

However, that dream is almost certainly about to end.

All the mean-mugging in the world doesn't equate to being able to compete with someone the caliber of Ronda Rousey, who not only has a better track record for WWE wins but also dominated UFC previously.

Morgan has two wins over The Baddest Woman on the Planet to her name...but only by technicality. Her Money in the Bank cash-in was after Rousey had already wrestled a match and it was still a struggle, and the titleholder actually tapped out while pinning her rival on the second occasion.

A third fortunate win isn't likely, particularly as we start inching toward WrestleMania season, where WWE will assuredly put more effort into making sure Rousey is in a prominent position.

The only way Morgan retains is if someone interferes to cost her opponent, but no one has been teased for that role, so watch out for a new champion here.
