UFC 141 Results: 3 Reasons Why Brock Lesnar Should NOT Retire
It was a sad night for fans of UFC heavyweight Brock Lesnar as the former champion announced that he was retiring from mixed martial arts.
The announcement came during his post-fight interview with commentator Joe Rogan after his loss to Alistair Overeem at UFC 141. The loss was a brutal, first-round technical knockout, his second straight defeat.
As one of the biggest names in the sport, Lesnar is stepping away from a lot. Before making a final decision, he should reevaluate his choice and consider staying in the UFC.
Here are three reasons why Lesnar should NOT retire.
He's Still in His Prime
1 of 3Having been involved in professional sports his entire adult life, one can understand why Lesnar would be tired from all the training and bruises.
But at 34 years of age, Lesnar is still in his prime in MMA and has at least a few more years left.
When he took the belt from Randy Couture at UFC 91, Couture was 45 years old. "The Natural" only just retired this year and went 3-2 after his loss to Lesnar.
Look at former Pride and Strikeforce champion Dan Henderson. This MMA legend is gunning for another title run and still in his prime despite being in his 40s.
Now these are extreme examples and no one can tell how much of a toll the surgeries have had on Lesnar, but going by his age and his performances (even in his losses), he's still got some time left in his prime.
He's Still Got Room to Improve
2 of 3Lesnar's biggest problem is that his game is not as well-rounded as it can be in order to compete at the highest level.
He's got a great base in wrestling and his size and strength have helped him immensely, but it is clear from last night that his striking needs to improve vastly.
With his athleticism and work ethic, Lesnar could be a force in the stand-up if he put his mind to it.
Look at Jon Jones and see what he's done in just a few years. I'm not saying Lesnar would be able to do flying kicks but he's the same type of athlete in the way that he can easily adopt new skill sets if he puts in the work.
Still the Biggest Draw in the Sport
3 of 3Never has there been a fighter in MMA history that has gotten so much attention during each one of his bouts.
Since coming to the UFC, Lesnar has been one of the promotion's biggest draws. With a huge fan base—as well as plenty of detractors—Lesnar is stepping away from a lot.
Fans still want to see him fight and there are plenty of matchups left for him that the UFC would be happy to promote.
