WWE 2K22: Top Gameplay Videos and Comments from WWE Superstars
WWE 2K22 is set to be released on all platforms March 11, and anticipation is mounting to see how this year's game will set itself apart from previous offerings in the series.
"It hits different" is the working tagline for WWE 2K22, and while that relates to several aspects of the game, it looks to be especially true when it comes to gameplay mechanics.
WWE 2K20 received its fair share of criticism for glitches and bugs, but all signs point toward WWE 2K22 making huge strides in those areas more than two years later.
The following is a collection of videos aimed to show off the advancements in WWE 2K22's gameplay, as well as a look at what some of WWE's top Superstars are saying about the video game.
Top Gameplay Videos
WWE 2K22 is likely to live and die by its gameplay after the issues experienced with WWE 2K20, and the game's developers seem well-aware of the need for huge improvements.
That much is evidenced by the fact that the WWE 2K22 developers have been upfront and vocal about the gameplay and what has been done to make this year's game a far better experience.
In the following video, the developers talked over a WWE 2K22 match between cover athlete Rey Mysterio and Damian Priest, offering their thoughts on how far the game has come when compared to two years ago:
The developers discussed several tweaks in this year's game, including improved character models through a new animation system, a new physics system to create a smooth and realistic WWE experience and simplified controls to ensure anyone can pick up and play WWE 2K22.
Another video released by WWE 2K22 showcased gameplay but also focused on entrances and detailed looks at the new character models:
Along with giving gamers a look at the improved graphics, small tastes of the new backstage environment and the new manner in which characters interact with weapons were also provided.
In much the same vein as gameplay, new game modes were added to WWE 2K22 and existing ones were improved upon as well.
MyGM and MyFaction are both brand-new game modes meant to aid in the replayability of the game and provide players with a far more immersive experience.
MyGM marks the return of an old mode from WWE games of yesteryear, and it allows players to choose their general manager and take control of a brand by drafting rosters and booking matches.
Meanwhile, MyFaction is something that has never been done before in a wrestling game, as gamers are tasked with creating their own stables and completing challenges.
Superstar Showcase also returns, and it is headlined by Mysterio, featuring many of the greatest matches and moments in his illustrious career.
Finally, MyRise is a new and improved version of MyCareer in which players take a Superstar from the very bottom and look to build them up to Hall of Fame status within WWE.
Comments from WWE Superstars
There is palpable excitement for the release of WWE 2K22, and that is even true among the WWE Superstars who will be represented in the game.
As the cover athlete, Mysterio has been particularly vocal about the game and what it means to him to be featured so prominently.
During a press conference, Mysterio discussed why it means so much to him to be on the cover:
"This is an incredible moment for me really to be able to represent the culture of Lucha Libre as a cover Superstar of WWE 2K22. It's a moment of great pride not just for me, but for the generations that come after me and for all my people, man. All of my Latinos. This is a great moment."
One Superstar who may have a bit more investment in WWE 2K22 than most is Xavier Woods, who is well-known for his love of video games.
Woods has parlayed that into successful side projects in addition to his role as a WWE Superstar, including the UpUpDownDown YouTube channel and his gig as a host on the G4 gaming channel.
Speaking to Bleacher Report's Graham "GSM" Matthews, Woods gave his take on the game and his hope that it will represent a huge bounce-back for the WWE 2K series:
"I'm hoping this game brings back that equity with the gamer fans because I know it was hard to play some of them, to be honest. They all have their good things and their great aspects, but as far as a fun video game is concerned, sometimes I'm just looking for that and I feel like the learning curve got a little intense. On this one, they said there's remastered controls and all that stuff and I feel good about it. So, like I said, fingers crossed."
Former WWE champion Drew McIntyre expressed a similar sentiment when he discussed WWE 2K22 back in November.
In an interview with Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp, Jeremy Lambert and Robert DeFelice, McIntyre talked about his involvement and his expectations for the game:
"It's been awesome and ongoing for a while. I've been filming some different stuff for it, filming some liners, doing the scans. There has really been a lot of effort into this game. I think the last one, how things turned out, they weren't great. They owned that and know that and are making sure this one is absolutely perfect. I can't wait to play because I know how hard they've been working on it and it's going to be friggin' awesome when it comes out."
Those within WWE seem to have a positive outlook regarding WWE 2K22, but the true test will be impressing the WWE fans and gamers who purchase the game.
