With Michael Huff likely done in Oakland the Raiders will look to get as much competition as they can for the two safety positions.  On the first day of practice Tyvonn Branch started at FS while Mike Mitchell manned the SS position.  It's been reported that the Raiders are pursuing 49ers safety Dashon Goldson.  That tell me that they aren't completely sold on what they have at safety right now.

Today they signed 6'4" 225 pound Quentin Scott.  Who?  Yeah, I never heard of him either until the Raiders signed him.  He played for the Northern Iowa Panthers.  Obviously not the biggest school in the nation nor the toughest competition but this kid is a big athlete that can play.

I did a little digging and here's what I got on him:

He had a great Pro Day back in 2010 with a 4.40 second forty yard dash.  He ran a second forty and still impressed with a time of 4.45 seconds.  He had a 35 inch vertical and a broad jump of over 10 feet.  He worked out as a DB and as a WR for numerous scouts.  The Chicago Bears ended signing him to their practice squad last season.

In 2009 he led his team with five interceptions to go with 39 tackles.  He even had a punt return for 14 yards.  He isn't afraid to mix it up either as he played LB at Northern Iowa as well.  He is a big athlete that likes to hit.  If this kid goes hard he just might be able to land a spot on the roster.  Who knows?

His problem thus far is finding a position.  He just might find a home at safety with the Raiders.  With his size and speed he would be an excellent ST player.  I'm looking forward to seeing him in preseason.
