So it's the end of January in the Philadelphia sports world, and usually this is boredom time for any Philadelphia sports fan.
The Eagles just had a disappointing end to a magical season, the Sixers may make the playoffs with a losing record, and baseball season is still nine weeks away.
But, for all of you looking for something to pay attention to, I ask you check out a Philadelphia Flyers game. Now, I know all the reasons why people don't like hockey, but I think if you give them a chance, you will be hooked just like me.
Here are five reasons why.
5. They did go to the finals last year
A team that historically came back from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Bruins and advance to the finals last year is looking even BETTER than they did last year. They even kept a winning record while their captain Chris Pronger was on the mend. When is the last time you can say that about a Philly team?
4. Claude Giroux is having the season of his life
If you watched the finals last year, you may have heard his name, (it's pronounced Klade Jer-rue) and he has come from pretty much nowhere to lead the league in short-handed goals and to be in the top 25 in goals in general. Oh, and he also made the all-star team. Nothing is better than watching a star be born right before your eyes.
3. If you missed the Senators-Flyers game on January 20th, you missed the Broad Street Bullies
In a game that was already decided, the Senators decided they wanted to take a few cheap shots on some Flyers players...and you never take a cheap shot on a bully. They literally asked each other "Hey you wanna go?" Don't believe me? Check out the video.
2. The Flyers have only lost once this year
Since 2011 has started, they have gone 8-1. They are playing superb and who doesn't like a winner? Not too mention for as good as they are, (they have the best record in the NHL) they only have ONE ALL-STAR!!! So they also got snubbed.
1. Anything less than a Stanley Cup is considered a disappointment
I don't think ever in my lifetime has a hockey team in Philly had the expectations of "champions or bust." The Eagles have had it quite a few times, and we know how that ended. The Phillies will have that this year. But these Flyers have their eyes set on the prize and they might just get it. I'm telling you, get on the bandwagon now. Besides, what else are you going to watch?
