Oft-injured superstar Peter Forsberg may make a surprise return to the NHL with his old team the Colorado Avalanche.

Less than a month ago, the 37-year old abandoned a comeback attempt with MODO of the Swedish Elite League, leaving the team the following message, “There will be no comeback.  The foot is not for games.”

Now Forsberg is sensationally set to practice with the Avalanche to test the pain barrier of his troublesome foot.  He will take part in his first session with the team on Saturday and revealed, “I need to see where I am physically and practicing with NHL players is the best way to find that out.”

Forsberg ditched an NHL comeback last March with another of his former clubs in the Philadelphia Flyers.  A contract was offered to him by Flyers' general manager Paul Holmgren but Forsberg later stated that his nagging injury was the only thing that stood in the way of a return last season.

With the news of Avs left-winger Thomas Fleischmann being shelved for the rest of the season, Forsberg's potential addition to the Colorado would come at an opportune time.  Fleischmann's condition will require him to be on blood thinners for several months due to blood clots in both lungs.

There isn't any guarantee that Forsberg will return to the NHL as his foot problems are reoccurring but fans around the league would welcome his return.  When he is healthy, the Swede is still capable of producing magical displays on the ice and put up strong numbers in his last season with MODO, as he notched 30 points in 23 Swedish Elite League games.

His last full NHL season came in 2005-06 with the Flyers when "Foppa" scored a remarkable 75 points in 60 games.  Even in his injury-plagued final two years, one split between the Flyers and Nashville Predators and the other with the Avalanche, his points per-game ratios were outstanding.

Fans will be eager to see how effective Forsberg can be in the second half of the 2010-11 season if he does indeed return.  Colorado currently sits at eighth place in the Western Conference and Forsberg's presence could secure a playoff spot.
