Cristobal Huet To Play in Switzerland Next Season, $5.625 Million Cap Hit Gone

John TaboneAug 23, 2010

A Swiss news site, 20 Minutes Online, has reported that Chicago Blackhawk goaltender Cristobal Huet will play in Switzerland next season. He has been loaned to Fribourg-Gotteron, a team in the Swiss league under a one-year contract.

What does this mean for the Blackhawks? Huet's $5.625 million contract will not count againt the Hawks' cap. Therefore, some of the Hawks' cap issues are gone just like that.

Many have speculated that Hawks management would either bury Huet in the minors or loan Huet to a European team. If Huet were to go to the minors, he would have little to no chance to play with the Hawks again.

When given the option to play in Europe, Huet took the offer as he will be close to home and in a more desirable area.

Heck. Where would you rather play? Rockford or Switzerland?

Update:

"RT @ChrisKuc: Agent for Cristobal Huet says agreement to send#Blackhawks goaltender to Fribourg-Gotteron of the Swiss League is not yet done."

It is probably pending league approval. It should be approved by tomorrow morning the latest.
