Mr. McNabb Goes to Washington

Brandon KeenerApr 6, 2010

Mel Kiper must have screamed when the Redskins pull the trigger and went after Donovan McNabb, former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback. All the strategic planning that every team in the NFL was putting together for the upcoming NFL Draft has just be shaken to the core by a rumble measuring 8.0 on the "WHOA" scale.

New regime managers Shanahan/Allen follow the typical Redskins fashion of slowly sneaking in and making one huge splash during the off season and so far that splash is a tidal wave.

The last time the Redskins and Eagles actually traded a quarterback to come to D.C. was Sonny Jurgenson in 1964 and that worked out pretty well for the Redskins.

McNabb, 33, may have reached his "prime" a few years ago but many still feel he has a lot left in his tank. Many consider him to be too injury prone. He has only played one full season since 2003.

However, when healthy, McNabb proves time and time again that he is one of the best scrambling quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL. He has a lifetime QB Rating of 86.5, which is a respectable rating of even a pocket passer.

His rushing numbers have dropped in recent years due to a playing calling system that included, what seemed like, 100 dump off passes to then RB Brian Westbrook but he can still handle the run. With 28 rushing touchdowns in his caree,r he is no stranger to tucking it in and running.

Many people wondered if Redskins fans would embrace McNabb since he was coming from a rival Eagles team within the same conference.

It appeared evident during his news conference and the buzz around the Nation's Capital that they are ready for a winning quarterback with experience to teach and play.

Will McNabb have the same success as Sonny Jurgenson? Probably not.

Jurgenson was four years McNabb's junior when he made the trip down I-95 to D.C. but there is no denying one thing each trade has in common, Philly fans are scratching their heads a little bit for what they got in return.
