Today, the New York Jets have signed veteran Running Back LaDainian Tomlinson. He has signed a reported $5.2 million over two seasons and gains another $500,000 in incentives.
The motivation for the Jets to sign Tomlinson is easy to understand, they wanted a veteran Running Back to fill in the shoes of Thomas Jones for cheap.
While the Jets got LaDainian Tomlinson for $5.2million for two years, Thomas Jones was supposed to get $5.8 million for just this season, before getting cut a few weeks back.
The real question though is how will the signing of LT affect the Jets this year, and in my opinion I think that the signing will help the Jets.
First of all, LT is still a pretty good Running Back even though he is over 30 years old. He might not put as high of numbers as Thomas Jones did, but he will still put up solid numbers since he has a good offensive line with Faneca, Ferguson, and Mangold blocking for him.
His presence will also be very valuable for backup Shonn Greene since he will help by providing Shonn Greene with valuable insight and advice that he has picked up from his hall of fame career.
Speaking of Shonn Green, the gaining of LaDainian Tomlinson does mean that Greene will get more than the 108 carries that he got this year and that will help Greene quite a lot with playing time and experience just like he got last season.
Even though the downgrade from a Thomas Jones in his prime to an old LaDainian Tomlinson does sound really bad, if you have a coach like Rex Ryan and good backups like Shonn Greene and a healthy Leon Washington then I know that this downgrade will somehow work for this young and up and coming team.
