Boston Celtics' Evan Turner Gets Ejected for Hitting Ref with the Ball (Video)

Mark VandeusenOct 15, 2014

There are a lot of ways to get thrown out of an NBA game, and in the case of the Boston Celtics' Evan Turner, tossing the ball at the referee is one of them.

Turner was assessed a technical foul for jawing at an official during the third quarter of the Celtics' 92-89 exhibition loss to the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night. When the whistle blew, Turner passed the ball in the direction of the referee, who then called a second technical (an automatic ejection) after being hit by it.

Considering the ball bounced twice and had backspin on it, referee Eric Lewis probably overreacted—especially since he would easily have caught the lob from Turner had he been looking in that direction.

However, Celtics coach Brad Stevens said in a postgame interview that he believed Lewis made the correct call.

There's also a good reason for the smirk on Rajon Rondo's face at the end of the above video clip. Celtics fans may recall a similar incident involving Rondo back in 2012.

While Turner's disqualification may have been somewhat premature, Rondo clearly got his money's worth with his ejection.
