Browns' Plans for Rookie WRs

What If the Browns Hired Mike Shanahan?

Aaron ConklinMay 31, 2009

Welcome to my article.

Let's get something straight right now. I am a Mangini supporter and I am backing him 100%.

I feel weird writing an article about a former Denver Broncos coach because of the infamous "Drive" that then Broncos quarterback John Elway orchestrated 98 yards to shatter my dreams of the Browns getting to the NFL Championship Game.

But I have to say something. What if the Browns owner, Mr. Randy Lerner, decided to wait just a few weeks later and hired former Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan?

Not saying that his choice is bad, I love the pick of Eric Mangini being our head coach.

But Mike Shanahan does have two Championships under his belt, and what has the Cleveland Browns organization been lacking for so many years? A NFL CHAMPIONSHIP.

We could have had a championship caliber coach that knows how to win the big games, but Mr.Lerner went with Mangini.

How would our team have looked if we had Shanahan?

1. Probably not the greatest defense, that was always one area of Shanahan's teams that were not exceptional.  He did have some okay defenses, but at best they were just par.

2. Our offense would have been in the top-five every year if we would have hired him.  Flat out he is a genius when it comes to the offensive side of the ball. For instance look at the running game that the Broncos have produced over the last 13 years since Shanahan has been coach. 11 out of 13 years his running game produced a 1000 yard rusher.

Also, the man is a leader on the field and off the field. The people of Denver loved the man as if he was homegrown right in their back yards.

Need I really say more about what an excellent coach he could have been for the Browns?

He will be a Hall of Fame inductee when his time is up for selection.

It really sounds if I am more about Shanahan being our coach than Mangini. Let me clear something up. I said earlier that I love the pick of Mangini and I will stick by that.

This was just a "What If" scenario if Shanahan became our coach.
