"The Special One" Beaten by "The Special Team" As Manchester United Retain UWCC

Barney Corkhill's Unofficial World Club Championship (UWCC) saw another defence yesterday as champions Manchester United took on Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan in the second leg of their Champions League tie.

The tie was poised at 0-0 after the first leg, with Manchester United many people's favourites to go through and continue their charge for the quintuple. It wasn't just Inter Milan who stood in their way, however. It was Jose Mourinho, and the psychological warfare that came with him.

A lot was made in the build up of Mourinho's record against United, and Sir Alex Ferguson himself said he would have to show this match extra caution because of "The Special One."

Whatever precautions he took certainly worked as he saw his team run out 2-0 winners.

Liverpool had showed in their tie against Real Madrid that a fast start could completely change the course of the match, and that is exactly what United got. Ryan Giggs whipped in a corner which was met by the head of Nemanja Vidic and Julio Cesar could do nothing but watch the ball fly in. United were 1-0 up after just four minutes.

United weren't at their very best, but a wasteful Inter Milan couldn't take advantage. Zlatan Ibrahimovic was inches away from giving Inter a vital away goal and silencing his critics, but his header hit the bar.

Dejan Stankovic then missed a golden opportunity to equalise, which would have, in effect, put Inter ahead due to the away goals rule.

As the half time interval came, Inter were looking capable of getting the away goal, but United were always dangerous and, with the players at their disposal, could score at any time. Evidence of this came just four minutes after the restart as Cristiano Ronaldo nodded in Wayne Rooney's cross to put United 2-0 up.

Adriano came close to getting one back for the Italians after hitting the inside of the post, but Inter couldn't find the breakthrough, and Ferguson claimed his second win over Mourinho.

The result was Manchester United's eighth defence of the UWCC title, one short of Fulham's all-time record.

83.9 percent of voters in the poll said that Inter Milan wouldn't be able to beat United and claim the UWCC title, so well done to those people!

Manchester United's next title defence comes on Saturday as they take on former-champions Liverpool in a massively important match as far as the Premier League title is concerned. Can Liverpool beat United to become the first club to have won the UWCC twice?!
