Jacksonville Jaguars Roster 2012: Latest News, Cuts, Preseason Predictions

0 of 18

NFL coaches will have a lot of tough decisions to make throughout training camp.

There are a number of talented football players that deserve a chance to play in the NFL, but there are only so many spots for these players.

Unfortunately, only 53 men will make up the final roster of the 2012 Jacksonville Jaguars and live out their dreams of playing at the highest level of professional football.

Between now and Week 1 of the regular season, 38 other men will have their childhood dreams dashed.

    Who will make the cut?

Stay tuned to this story throughout the course of training camp, as it will have daily roster updates on who will suit up in a Jaguars uniform in 2012.

August 28 Cuts

1 of 18

Here's a list of guys who were cut before the August 28 deadline:

CB Ashton Youboty: The Jags brought in a slew of cornerbacks at the beginning of camp, making it a dog fight for the limited roster spots. Despite being a league veteran, Youboty was cut due to him not standing out among the young talent the team brought in this season.

A veteran like Youboty will more than likely find another landing spot in 2012 as teams finalize their rosters and more injuries will unfortunately occur.

LB Donovan Richard: Richard was a victim of both the numbers game and a lack of production during the preseason. In three preseason games he recorded two tackles and two assists. That along with the quality play of J.K. Schaffer made a guy like Richard expendable.

Richard more than likely not land on another NFL roster.

DB Mike Holmes: The same goes for Mike Holmes as he was brought in merely as a camp body.

OT Dan Hoch: Hoch had an uphill battle from the very beginning. With injuries across the offensive line, the reserves got their chance to show their worth and they did. Unfortunately, Hoch never really got that chance. Chances are that this will be the last you see of Hoch until maybe training camp 2013/

RB DuJuan Harris: The emergence of Rashad Jennings, Keith Toston and Montell Owens gave head coah Mike Mularkey some tough decisions to make regarding the backfield. Harris was a marginally productive back with the Jaguars for a couple of seasons, but his time ran out with a new regime in place.

Harris showed he still has worth, however, as he was picked up claimed off waivers by the Steelers two days later.

QB Nathan Enderle: Enderle was behind the eight-ball to make the final 53-man roster throughout the preseason. It was only a matter of time before he was given his walking papers. I, personally, would be shocked if he showed up on another NFL roster.

FB Brock Bolen: Bolen was in one of the bigger position battles heading into camp, and he apparently could not beat out the ole veteran Greg Jones.

Jones showed he still has a lot to offer blocking for Rashad Jennings during the preseason, which made Bolen expendable. Although he may have been put on waivers, Bolen could still be eligible for the Jags' IR list if he clears waivers.

WR Chastin West: West had a pretty uneventful preseason catching only two passes for 18 yards in three games with the team. The team had a slew of receivers, making it tough for receivers who were not producing at a high level.

LB Nate Bussey: Much like Mike Holmes, Bussey was purely a camp body that really didn't have a great chance of making the team.

Other roster moves: DL Drew NowackC John Estes, G Jason Spitz and TE Matt Veldman were all placed on injured reserve to help the Jaguars get down to 75. Also helping make that happen was placing DE John Chick and LB Clint Session on the reserve physically unable to perform list.

Full Team Roster and Projected Depth Chart

2 of 18

The Jaguars currently have 91 players on the roster on the team web site, but it still lists running back Maurice Jones-Drew. Since he is currently on the reserve/did not report list, he does not count against the 90-man limit.

QB (3): Blaine Gabbert, Chad Henne, Jordan Palmer,

RB (6): Maurice Jones-Drew (if he returns), Rashad Jennings, Montell Owens, Jalen Parmele, Richard Murphy, Keith Toston

FB (2): Greg Jones, Will Ta'ufo'ou

WR (8): Laurent Robinson, Justin Blackmon, Cecil Shorts III, Mike Thomas, Mike Brown, Brian Robiskie, Kevin Elliott, Demetrius Williams

TE (5): Marcedes Lewis, Zach Miller, Zach Potter, Colin Cloherty, Matt Veldman (IR)

C (3): Brad Meester, Mike Brewster, John Estes (IR)

OG (5): Uche Nwaneri, Will Rackley (when he returns from injury), D.J. Hall, Jason Spitz (IR), Josh Beekman

Quarterbacks

3 of 18

QBs on roster: Blaine Gabbert, Chad Henne, Jordan Palmer

    Projected starter: Blaine Gabbert

Offseason additions: Chad Henne, Jordan Palmer, Nathan Enderle

    Roster cuts: Nathan Enderle

Projected final roster: Blaine Gabbert, Chad Henne, Jordan Palmer

Gabbert has had a solid preseason. Not great, but solid and has firmly cemented himself as the starter in Jacksonville.

Chad Henne will be the backup, but not by a whole as he did not have a great preseason and Jordan Palmer, the No. 3 quarterback showed some impressive signs.

Running Backs

4 of 18

RB's on the roster: Maurice Jones-Drew, Rashad Jennings, Jalen Parmele, Richard Murphy, Montell Owens, Keith Toston

    Projected starter: Maurice Jones-Drew/Rashad Jennings

Offseason additions: Jalen Parmele, Keith Toston

    Roster cuts: DuJuan Harris

Projected final roster: Maurice Jones-Drew, Rashad Jennings, Montell Owens, DuJuan Harris

Reports are that the Jaguars have no plans on trading running back Maurice Jones-Drew, so it looks like this saga will drag on a little longer before it ends.

Jaguars fans have been treated to a great preseason from Rashad Jennings who took full advantage of Jones-Drew's absence.

If Jones-Drew is not back with the team by Week 1, Jennings is definitely a suitable replacement.

Fullbacks

5 of 18

FB's on the roster: Greg Jones, Brock Bolen, Will Ta'ufo'ou

    Projected starter: Greg Jones

Offseason additions: Naufahu Tahi, Will Ta'ufo'ou

Roster cuts: Naufahu Tahi, Brock Bolen

    Projected final roster: Greg Jones

The fullback job seems to be Greg Jones' to lose at this point.

Bolen could still land on the IR if he clears waivers, however.

Wide Receivers

6 of 18

WRs on the roster: Laurent Robinson, Justin Blackmon, Cecil Shorts III, Mike Thomas, Mike Brown, Kevin Elliott, Brian Robiskie, Demetrius Williams

Projected starters: Laurent Robinson, Justin Blackmon

Offseasons additions: Laurent Robinson, Justin Blackmon, Lee Evans, Mike Brown, Kevin Elliott, Brian Robiskie

Roster cuts: Lee Evans, Taylor Price

Projected final roster: Laurent Robinson, Justin Blakcmon, Cecil Shorts III, Mike Brown

The Jaguars have their top two receivers essentially set in stone with Justin Blackmon and Laurent Robinson.

With that being said, teams typically keep no more than five receivers on their 53-man roster. So expect at least three more cuts or one or two guys moved to the practice squad before it's all said and done.

Tight Ends

7 of 18

TE's on the roster: Marcedes Lewis, Zach Miller, Zach Potter, Colin Cloherty, Matt Veldman (IR)

    Projected starter: Marcedes Lewis

Offseason additions: Colin Cloherty, Matt Veldman, Gijon Robinson

    Roster Cuts: Gijon Robinson

Projected final roster: Marcedes Lewis, Zach Miller, Zach Potter, Colin Cloherty

The big news with the tight ends have been all about the injuries. Zach Miller had been oft-injured during the offseason and Matt Veldman has been placed on injured reserve, opening things up for Colin Cloherty.

Offensive Tackles

8 of 18

OTs on roster: Eben Britton, Eugene Monroe, Guy Whimper, Cameron Bradfield, Lee Barbiasz, Daniel Baldridge,

Projected starters: Eben Britton, Eugene Monroe

Offseason additions: Lee Barbiasz, Dan Hoch

    Roster cuts: Dan Hoch

Projected final roster: Eden Britton, Eugene Monroe, Guy Whimper, Cameron Bradfield

There have been a lot of shuffling going on among the offensive tackles during the preseason, which included Eben Britton playing guard because of the numerous injuries. .

Britton along with Monroe, Whimper and Bradfield have spots locked up, in my opinion. Baldridge and Barbiasz will wait to play the waiting game.

Offensive Guards

9 of 18

OGs on the roster: Uche Nwrneri, Will Rackley, D.J. Hall, Jr. Jason Spitz, Josh Beekman

Projected starters: Uche Nwaneri, Will Rackley

Offseason additions: D.J. Hall,  Jr., Josh Beekman

    Roster cuts: None

Projected final roster: Uche Nwarneri, Will Rackley, D.J. Hall, Jr.

Injuries have ravaged this position since the beginning of camp. The lack of depth showed as the second and third units gave up a good amount of sacks.

The Jags were so thin that they moved defensive player Drew Nowack to guard, which could explain the number of sacks in the second half.

The addition of Beekman will at the very least give the team an extra body to use at the guard position in camp.

Centers

10 of 18

OCs on the roster: Brad Meester, John Estes (IR), Mike Brewster

    Projected starter: Brad Meester

    Offseason additions: Mike Brewster

    Roster cuts: None

Projected final roster: Brad Meester, Mike Brewster

With Estes being done for the year after being put on injured reserve, the top two centers are firmly in place. This gives Brewster ample opportunity to sit and learn from one of the best centers in the game in Meester.

Defensive Ends

11 of 18

DEs on roster: Jeremy Mincey, Andre Branch, Austen Lane, John Chick (IR), George Selvie, Aaron Morgan, Odrick Ray, Ryan Davis, Kendrick Adams

Projected starters: Jeremy Mincey, Andre Branch

Offseason additions: Kendrick Adams, Ryan Davis, Odrick Ray

    Roster cuts: None

Projected final roster: Jeremy Mincey, Andre Branch, Austen Lane, George Selvie, Aaron Morgan

The Jaguars defensive have shown flashes of greatness at times during the preseason, especially in the first two games.

This should Jaguars fans very happy as they have been starving for a disruptive defensive line for years.

With Chick being placed on IR, this may open up a spot for someone who may not have made the team if that didn't occur.

Nonetheless, the Jags will still probably make two to three more cuts before the beginning of the regular season.

Defensive Tackles

12 of 18

DTs on roster: Tyson Alualu, Terrance Knighton, C.J. Mosley, D'Anthony Smith, Corvey Irvin, Jeris Pendleton, Drew Nowack (IR)

Projected starters: Tyson Alualu, Terrance Knighton

Offseason additions: Jeris Pendleton, Drew Nowack

    Roster cuts: None

Projected final roster: Tyson Alualu, Terrance Knighton, Jeris Pendleton, D'Anthony Smith

The defensive tackles have had their share of highlights as well this preseason.

Despite the highlights, there will probably at least one cut from this unit before it is all said and done.

Outside Linebackers

13 of 18

OLBs on roster: Daryl Smith, Russell Allen, Clint Session (IR), Julian Stanford, Kyle Bosworth

Projected starters: Daryl Smith, Russell Allen

Offseason additions: Julian Stanford, Donovan Richard

    Roster cuts: Donovan Richard

Projected final roster: Daryl Smith, Russell Allen, Julian Stanford

The only news from this unit is Session being placed on IR and Donovan Richard being waived, neither of which were all that surprising.

Middle Linebackers

14 of 18

MLBs on roster: Paul Posluszny, Brandon Marshall, J.K. Schaffer, Joshua Jones

    Projected starter: Paul Posluszny

Offseason additions: Brandon Marshall, J.K. Schaffer, Joshua Jones

    Roster cuts: None

Projected final roster: Paul Posluszny, Brandon Marshall, J.K. Schaffer

Posluszny is firmly in place as the starter. There is no doubt about that.

J.K. Schaffer has had himself quite a preseason as he consistently among the team leaders in tackles during the preseason.

Cornerbacks

15 of 18

CBs on roster: Aaron Ross, Rashean Mathis, Mike Harris, Antonio Dennard, Kevin Rutland, Derek Cox, William Middleton, Antwon Blake, Trumaine McBride, Leigh Torrence

Projected starters: Aaron Ross, Rashean Mathis

Offseason additions: Aaron Ross, Mike Harris, Antonio Dennard, Antwon Blake, Leigh Torrence, Reggie Corner, T.J. Heath

Roster cuts: Reggie Corner, T.J. Heath

Projected final roster: Aaron Ross, Rashean Mathis, Mike Harris, Ashton Youboty, Antonio Dennard, Derek Cox

There has already been a cut from this unit and expect many more to come before the regular season starts.

One thing to look at is that Rashean Mathis will be playing the nickel corner spot. Derek Cox and Aaron Ross have been tapped as the starters on the outside.

Everything else besides those three spots are up for grabs.

Safeties

16 of 18

Safeties on roster: Dwight Lowery, Dawan Landry, Courtney Greene, Chris Prosinski, Rod Isaac, Jeremiah Brown

Projected starters: Dwight Lowery, Dawan Landry

    Offseason additions: Jeremiah Brown

    Roster cuts: Jeremiah Brown

Projected final roster: Dwight Lowery, Dawan Landry, Rod Isaac, Chris Prosinski, Courtney Greene

Nothing seems to have changed too much on the back end of the secondary.

Landry and Lowery are in place as the starters, and the rest are fighting for reserve roles on the roster.

Kicking Specialists

17 of 18

Kicking specialists on roster: K Josh Scobee, P Bryan Anger

Projected starters: Josh Scobee, Bryan Anger

    Offseason additions: Bryan Anger

    Roster cuts: None

Projected final roster: Josh Scobee, Bryan Anger

One area the Jaguars seem to be rock-solid is the kicking area. They have one of the best kickers in the game in Josh Scobee and what could potentially turn out to be a great punter in Bryan Anger.

    No changes here.

Return Specialists

18 of 18

Return specialists on roster: Mike Thomas, Cecil Shorts III

    Projected starter: Mike Thomas

    Offseason additions: None

    Roster cuts: None

Projected final roster: Mike Thomas, Cecil Shorts III

We finally got a bit of a clearer picture as to who will be returning kicks for the Jaguars this season.

Thomas did nothing spectacular returning kicks and punts. He returned two kicks for 19 yards and one punt for two yards

His return mate, receiver Mike Brown, did not have a good night. He returned one kick for yards and three punts for eight yards.

Brown will be in some hot water due to his two fumbles on returns, including one that resulted in a turnover.
