NFL Free Agency 2012: San Francisco 49ers Reportedly Sign WR Mario Manningham

Richard LangfordMar 17, 2012

According to Pro Football Talk, the San Francisco 49ers have reached an agreement with free-agent wide receiver Mario Manningham.

This will be the second big free-agent signing the 49ers have made this offseason, as they agreed to terms with the recently unretired Randy Moss earlier in the week. Ā

PFT broke the news via their Twitter account.

Manningham has spent his entire four-year career with the New York Giants. In those four years he has totaled 2,315 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns in the regular season.Ā

He battled injuries last year and played in just 12 regular season games for the Giants. He finished with 39 catches for 523 yards and four touchdowns. All of those numbers were his lowest since his rookie season.Ā

Despite his relatively meager regular season production, his contribution to the Giants was invaluable as he turned in one of the biggest catches in Super Bowl history.Ā

During the regular season, it wasn't just injuries that held Manningham back. The emergence of Victor Cruz forced Manningham out of the starting lineup, and likely hastened his decision to leave.Ā

Manningham is not likely to be guaranteed a starting job in San Francisco. He will be competing with incumbent Michael Crabtree and the newly signed Moss. Given that Moss is a wild-card to be a factor, Manningham's chances of starting are far greater with the 49ers than with the Giants.Ā
