NBA Rumors and Speculation: Players Still Looking for Teams
Despite the NBA season in full swing, there is still a long list of free agents who remain unsigned and without a team.
While it might take an injury or two for some of the veterans on this list to keep their careers going, other candidates are worthy of roster spots right now, and it's a surprise that they haven't been able to find an interested franchise.
It will be very intriguing to see what teams roll the dice and take a flier on one (or more) from this group as the season drags on, and there is a real chance some of these guys won't find a spot on the bench for any club this year.
NOTE: Potential destinations listed include teams that could use the player, but are not necessarily in pursuit of him at this time.
Etan Thomas, F/C
1 of 13Thomas was a regular face for fans to see during the long days of the lockout, but he hasn't been in the picture recently and is no slam dunk to reappear in the future.
After spending last season with the Hawks, Thomas is looking for a new home in order to continue his playing career, but there doesn't seem to be much demand for a 33-year-old veteran big man.
He's one player who might very well need an injury to get a chance with a team this season, but a cerebral player like Thomas should be able to latch on somewhere.
Potential Destinations: Memphis, Dallas, Houston
Joel Przybilla, C
2 of 13Przybilla has gone back and forth on whether or not he wants to continue playing or enjoy being a full-time dad, and he's almost certainly going to flip-flop a little more before making a final decision.
He would be a really nice pickup in the reserve unit for a team that is desperate for size, and there is no question that he'd come rather cheaply if he does sign with a club.
The veteran would probably like to sign with a contender if he does resume playing after two devastating knee injuries, as the allure of a championship is tough for any player to ignore.
Potential Destinations: Boston, Philadelphia, Orlando
Joe Smith, PF
3 of 13Smith was a former No. 1 overall draft pick, but he never really emerged in the way many were expecting him to when coming out of Maryland.
After being traded from New Jersey to Los Angeles last year, Smith barely got off the bench and it was clear that the end of his career was on the horizon.
He's not garnering much interest around the league, but he could be picked up by a team looking to make a playoff push later in the season if a big man at the end of the bench goes down.
Potential Destinations: Retirement
Erick Dampier, C
4 of 13Dampier looked lost when he got into the game for Miami during the 2010-11 season, and teams around the league clearly took notice of his rapidly declining game.
Although he hasn't found a new team to join just yet, size is at a premium in this league, and there is typically always room on some team's bench for a veteran seven-footer.
He's another guy that might need an injury or unexpectedly poor play from someone currently on a team to get an opportunity, but he's likely on more than one team's short list of players to call in case an addition is needed.
Potential Destinations: Toronto, San Antonio, Memphis
Julian Wright, F
5 of 13Wright is one guy who has always had impressive athleticism, but that hasn't exactly translated to his having success at the highest level.
Despite being the No. 13 overall pick in 2007 and just 24 years old, Wright hasn't found a team willing to take a flier on his potential to contribute.
He wouldn't come at a large expense whatsoever, but after the downtrodden Hornets and Raptors both gave up on him in previous seasons, it's hard to imagine better teams willing to kick his tires.
Potential Destinations: Los Angeles (Lakers), Cleveland, Atlanta
Kyrylo Fesenko, C
6 of 13Fesenko didn't have any sort of real success during his tenure in Utah, but that hasn't stopped the amount of interest in him rising around the league in recent weeks.
The Mavericks have made an offer to Fesenko, but (believe it or not) Dallas is the fifth team to express a recent inquiry in acquiring his services.
The Heat, Clippers, Pistons and Warriors have all checked in on him, and the Raptors have also "joined the bidding" to bring him aboard.
He'd be nothing more than depth at the end of the bench for any team listed.
Potential Destinations: Miami, Golden State, Detroit
Leon Powe, PF
7 of 13It's startling that Powe hasn't been able to find a new team as his style of play is one that all teams could use in the second unit, but health has been an issue for the power forward in the past.
He could really help a team that needs an energy guy to be active underneath the basket, but that only applies if he is fully healthy and isn't having any long-term issues with his surgically-repaired knee.
Powe will likely look to catch on with a team at some point as the season progresses, and it would be shocking if he went the entire year without signing.
Potential Destinations: Indiana, New Jersey, San Antonio
Eddie House, PG
8 of 13In a somewhat surprising move, Miami chose to waive veteran Eddie House just before the season began.
The choice was made because House is still recuperating from offseason knee surgery, and although it is an interesting move for some, it makes sense for the Heat given the current structure of the roster.
House only really held value as a sniper from beyond the arc, and with James Jones and Mike Miller both in the fold, there was no need to for Miami to keep him.
He would have been behind both Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole on the depth chart.
Potential Destinations: Philadelphia, Orlando, San Antonio
Yi Jianlian, F/C
9 of 13Yi had a unique clause in his contract in China to allow him to sign stateside once the lockout lifted, but there hasn't been much interest in him from any team around the league.
Despite being the No. 6 overall selection in 2007, Yi has had a really tough go of things during his career in the NBA and hasn't been able to showcase the potential that so many saw in him before he initially made the jump.
It's tough to say that he's going to find a team willing to take him on after he flamed out in Milwaukee, New Jersey and Washington.
Potential Destinations: Golden State, Cleveland, Atlanta
Nate Robinson, G
10 of 13Robinson was dealt to Oklahoma City as a part of the Kendrick Perkins trade last season, but the Thunder never really had a role for him off the bench.
After the team drafted Reggie Jackson in the offseason, the writing was on the wall in regards to Robinson's future with the team.
The two sides agreed to buy out the final year remaining on his deal, and Robinson will look to reinvent his image around the league with the hopes of catching on as a spark plug off the bench.
Potential Destinations: Atlanta, Los Angeles (Lakers), New Orleans
Gilbert Arenas, PG
11 of 13Arenas was waived by Orlando before the season began after the team decided to use its amnesty clause on him, and there has been very little interest in bringing him in from any other team.
There were no bids placed on his behemoth contract when he was subjected to secondary waivers, and although his preferred destinations include Miami, New York, Los Angeles or wherever Dwight Howard gets traded to, the point guard might not get his wish.
The Heat look all set at the point position, the Knicks have added Baron Davis and the Lakers are reportedly "hesitant" to pull the trigger on such a move.
Potential Destinations: Los Angeles (Lakers), New Jersey
Michael Redd, G/F
12 of 13UPDATE: Redd is likely to sign with the Phoenix Suns following a workout with the team.
Redd is one veteran who was a near certainty to find a team prior to the season despite injury concerns, but that just hasn't happened.
The Pacers were thought to be "in the lead" for Redd about a week prior to Christmas, but Indiana looked pretty good in the opening game without him and may choose to keep going with the same group already on board.
Although health is a major concern considering he's coming off of back-to-back ACL tears in the same knee, Redd could really be a bargain as a scorer in the second unit if (and only if) he's healthy.
Potential Destinations: Indiana, Oklahoma City, Atlanta
Andrei Kirilenko
13 of 13Kirilenko is currently playing abroad in Russia with CSKA Moscow, but there have been plenty of rumors swirling with his name at the epicenter.
There was a report that he was weighing offers from both Sacramento and New Jersey, but each has addressed more pressing needs elsewhere and neither club would have the cap space available to fit his requested asking price.
He's made no secret that he enjoys playing in Russia, and it wouldn't really be all that surprising to see him spend the season there and re-enter the NBA market for the 2012 free-agent frenzy.
