WWE Should Use Zack Ryder's Internet Championship in Storylines

The Doctor Chris MuellerDec 27, 2011

Zack Ryder may be the US Champion in WWE, but he is also the Internet Champion in his own little world.

The belt cost approximately $1,600 to make, and Ryder takes great pride in it.

Some would mock the title because he did not win it, but Ted Dibiase never won the Million Dollar Championship either, and many people loved that angle.

Ryder does deserve some kind of real Internet title for how well he has used the World Wide Web to his advantage. Does it make me seem old if I use the term "World Wide Web" these days?

He used Twitter and Facebook to interact with his fans on a more personal level, and he used YouTube to reach the millions of people who were not able to see him on WWE TV.

After his videos became a cult sensation and he began building his own following for his humor, he made the belt we have seen in most of his recent videos and began calling himself the Internet Champion.

WWE has never made much of this outside of the occasional mention by Michael Cole during one of Ryder's matches, but they should really utilize this to their advantage.

With WWE actually having some matches that are only broadcast on their website, it would make a perfect addition to the set of championships WWE has.

I am not hoping for this to have the same value as the IC or US titles, but to be more like a Million Dollar title or even the hardcore title in its later days.

It would be something for the very low card guys to fight over without WWE needing to put them on TV to do it.

WCW had the World Television Championship—the Internet Championship seems like the next logical step in the evolution of wrestling titles.

Ryder could also use this as a way of claiming to be the only dual champion in WWE today. Carrying two belts makes you seem like a much bigger deal than you really are.

The belt is actually kind of cool-looking for what it is. The middle piece is made to look like the logo on Ryder's merchandise, while the side plates have the logos of the various social networks Ryder used to make himself famous.

The WWE network could also play a role in this, as WWE is going to be looking for more content. What they could do is have matches for the title air on WWE.com to keep it a legit Internet title, then play those matches back a week later on their network.

This would give fans without Internet at home a chance to see this stuff, and it would give fans without the network service a chance to see some content that is shown on the network, win-win.

I know it is a long shot for WWE to actually use the title since it belongs to Ryder and they would no doubt have to pay him for its use, but they could at least copy the concept with Ryder's approval and create their own belt, because what superstars would want Ryder's face on the front of their championship anyways?

Ryder's stock is rising considerably these days. You can tell, because WWE started to make all their obscure merchandise with his face on it, like the garden gnome, which is only available for seven superstars, all six of the others being much bigger stars than Ryder.

I have become a big fan of Ryder over the past year because of his hard work and improvements he has made to his game. I just hope he continues to get pushed and does not suffer from being too popular too fast like some have in the past.

What do you think? Is there a place in WWE for an Internet championship?
