WWE/TNA: Top 5 Disappointments in Pro Wrestling for 2011

Justin WatryDec 26, 2011

WWE had a very entertaining past 12 months. The Royal Rumble was a great event. Wrestle Mania XXVII delivered big time. The WWE Universe was even treated to some enjoyable PPV events in the summer.

It was all closed out with some fun moments, with The Rock returning to the ring and Mick Foley returning to the company. Sadly, not everything was wonderful.

TNA Impact Wrestling had their usual year, and even WWE had a few missteps. Here are my biggest disappointments from the past year. Remember, it is just my opinion!

5. TNA Impact Wrestling's Entire Year

1 of 5

Honestly, I did not even want to mention DixieLand. I went back and forth on the decision, but I decided to just give them one slide. Notice how my articles on them suddenly stopped a few months ago?

"Wrestling Matters!" Excuse me while I laugh...

Sting vs. Jeff Hardy at Victory Road? Enough said.

Matt Hardy coming in to revolutionize the business? Good luck, Mr. Cold Blooded!

Chyna returning in a top feud? Yeah, I am sure somebody out there enjoyed that.

Hulk Hogan and Sting getting top billing all year? Yes, it is 2011.

Vignette for a 3-3-11 arrival? How original that was!

The Knockouts completely changing? They are now "WWE Divas" in my book.

The X-Division is now a Cruiserweight Division. No limits? Well, there is now.

What is their TV show called? Their company name? Anyone actually know (or care?)?

Finally, the ending to Bound for Glory was my last straw for TNA. I do not care what the followup was. It doesn't matter. This company has too many talented performers to continually be in the Impact Zone in Orlando making next to no "impact" on this business. Just sad...

Feel free to name any other disappointments for TNA! I know I left a lot of them out...

4. Alex Riley

2 of 5

I am a big fan of Alex Riley. The man has "it," and will eventually be a major star in this industry. It could take a year. It could take 10 years.

Any way you want to put it, his year was disappointing. Does anyone even remember him being drafter to Smackdown? Yeah, me neither!

Either way, his feud with The Miz was great, but I just don't think there was enough difference between the two. Riley was basically "Miz-lite" and had no reason to invest into him.

I am still a huge fan of the guy and think the world of him. However, now is just not the time.

3. Triple H as COO

3 of 5

Triple H fired Vince McMahon and took over the "day to day operations." That was a fine start to the next chapter of the story. Sadly, it all quickly fell off the rails.

Was Triple in charge of WWE? Just Raw? Maybe Smackdown? He showed up on Friday nights every once in awhile. Also, Johnny Ace was running Raw. What was going on here?

Then, Vince McMahon returns in October after the locker room walked out to relieve Triple H of his duties each Monday night. How did Vince decide this? Wasn't he fired? Why is Triple still the COO but not Raw General Manager?

Anyone following this? I know I am not, because none of it made sense. The "walk out" was made pointless a week later, and Vince's big return fell flat. None of it was any good.

This is what I talk about when I want things to be kept simple. A face. A heel. An easy story to be told. Nothing "insider" or "shoots" that end up confusing everything...

2. Cole vs. Lawler Continuing Past Mania

4 of 5

I loved Michael Cole until April. I enjoyed Jerry Lawler's little run through the winter. It was all building to a huge payoff at Wrestle Mania 27 in Atlanta.

It was a great story, and I have stated many times that I feel it added to the buy rate. Give credit to anybody you want, but Cole and Lawler get props from me!

Sadly, it continued past the big event. Then, I lost interest. Jim Ross was included in the story. Swagger never added anything to it. It just dragged on, and in many ways, it is still going on...

Again, this was a wonderful feud until Wrestle Mania. WWE continuing it longer? Very disappointing...

1. Sin Cara

5 of 5

For those wondering, I left out Edge retiring, Kharma's leave and Mark Henry's injury. Those were "extreme" incidents that I just could not include.

I think we all should have had a hint at how his year was going to go when he tripped over the top rope on his debut night. Then, his match with Primo featured a very noticeable "misstep" at the end.

He was quickly moved to Smackdown, and he was suspended for 30 days. That was a huge blow to his WWE career, but he could have bounced back. How did he return?

Yes, a feud with "Sinister Cara!" That was a good idea, but it went nowhere. The final "mask vs. mask" stipulation did not even get a PPV spot. It was on the Mexico Smackdown, which would have been fine...except it was barely advertised. Wow!

Finally,, he gets injured at Survivor Series and is out for another few months. That would end his 2011 run in WWE. Not much else to say...

REMINDER: I am now on Twitter @JustinWatry! I give every new follower a special shoutout, so do not be shy...thanks.
