Tampa Bay Buccaneers Coaching Search: Part 2 of 4
After looking at three possible replacements for Raheem Morris yesterday, it's time to digest a few more coaches the Tampa Bay Buccaneers may consider hiring if they decide to give Morris his walking papers.
Three candidates (Bill Cowher, Rob Chudzinski and Perry Fewell) were discussed in part one, and today we look at another set of three coaches the Glazers should have their eyes on.
The Buccaneers most likely are looking for a more offensive-minded coach. But, that doesn't necessarily mean their search should automatically be narrowed down to that, especially after seeing the guys on the other side of the ball get dominated week after week.
In this next group is a long-time head coach, an offensive coordinator who has been considered ready for a head coaching job for several years and a high-rising coach from an NFL powerhouse.
Jeff Fisher, Former Tennessee Titans Head Coach
1 of 3I'm not sure what to think of Fisher coaching the Buccaneers other than the fact it's not likely to occur. The name may resonate all over the league, but he shouldn't even be considered a top-tier coach.
He built the once-young Titans well, and building is obviously what this group in Tampa Bay needs. Otherwise, the possibility of looking for a new coach wouldn't exist.
But, Fisher isn't exactly the perfect fit for the Bucs.
I'll give Raheem Morris more than the benefit of the doubt due to the fact that he has a great personality. And though the Bucs are looking for much more important things in their next coach (if Morris is fired), an exuberant personality will help that coach gel with the young group in Tampa.
Fisher, on the other hand, is quite dull. There's no denying his solid coaching abilities, but he certainly fell off quite a bit in his last several years with the Titans, as he failed to win a single playoff game over seven seasons.
Besides, he may want more money and power than the Glazers are willing to concede. So, while he may coach next year in the NFL, I don't see it being in Tampa Bay.
Russ Grimm, Arizona Cardinals Offensive Coordinator
2 of 3Though a Hall of Fame bust doesn't always mean you'll end up a great head coach (just ask Mike Singletary), Russ Grimm has long been considered an option for many teams through the past few seasons.
Grimm will continue to be in the news when it comes to coaching vacancies, but leading an offense that's 25th in rushing and 17th in passing doesn't overly impress me.
Then again, you must consider the fact that John Skelton (who?) has been playing quite a few snaps, and when playing, Kevin Kolb has not been anywhere close to proving worthy of the fat contract he signed this past offseason.
Being an offensive-minded coach, he may have a slight advantage over a defensive coordinator. He also would be coaching the same team that his son, Cody Grimm, plays for, which could draw some interest from him to coach in Tampa.
But, he isn't as hot a commodity as some other offensive coordinators in the league. Sooner or later, he will become a head coach, but it may not be this year, and it probably won't be in pewter.
Joe Philbin, Green Bay Packers Offensive Coordinator
3 of 3Joe Philbin may have said he had a great job in Green Bay that he planned to remain at, but that was after he was offered the head coaching job at Tulane.
The Bucs may be bordering dreadful this second half, but an NFL head coaching job is still a major upgrade from a tier-three college. And with the way Philbin has helped transform the dynamic offense in Green Bay, he should be a strong candidate for the head job in Tampa Bay.
Mike Williams may not be Greg Jennings, and Preston Parker certainly isn't the second coming of Jordy Nelson. However, the Bucs want to continue to build weapons around Josh Freeman and improve Freeman, himself, in the process. Philbin may be the guy for the job.
Sure, Packers coach Mike McCarthy is seen by many as the genius behind the potent strike of the Green Bay offense, but Philbin can take more than his fair share of credit for the success of the Pack as well.
