Jerry Sandusky: Damage From Scandal Has Second Mile Charity On Its Death Bed

Donald WoodDec 26, 2011

The damage done by the accusations that Jerry Sandusky had sexual relations with underage boys reaches far past a little Penn State college community. It’s killing the Second Mile foundation.

At the end of the day, it’s Sandusky’s actions that are hurting children again.

With news that the insurance company that was paid to protect the foundation was trying to get out of any responsibility for court costs, the full-fledged exodus from everything tied to Sandusky has begun.

That will be the death blow for the Second Mile Foundation.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Sunday about the rush of people associated with Sandusky into exodus from the accused child molester:

"

The insurance company for Jerry Sandusky's charity, Second Mile Inc., wants to be excused from paying for his legal defense, a bill that could easily reach six figures if all litigation and criminal charges against him go to trial. Federal Insurance Co. of Warren, N.J., says any illegal acts by the former Pennsylvania State University assistant football coach were not committed in his capacity as an official of Second Mile, the nonprofit organization Sandusky founded in 1977 to help troubled youths.

"

While I believe that Sandusky committed these crimes, the Second Mile Charity and Foundation should not be punished unless there are people there that knew. I would bet that the majority of the workers and children at those facilities had nothing to do with any of this.

Those are the needless victims that will suffer if the foundation is dismantled like some people have called for. Many of the children that are in or came through Second Mile view it as a great place.

One man’s alleged reckless actions should not lead to the end of a place built to help children.

If this insurance company gets out from paying Sandusky’s legal costs, they will drop the foundation and they will be forced to look elsewhere. With no financial backing from many of the people who once kept the facilities running, Second Mile will not last very long.

More children needlessly hurt.
