2011 Bowl Games: Why Bowl Game System Is a Joke
Wouldn't it be great if the Green Bay Packers took on the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl and no other team had a crack at winning it all?
College football purists who stand behind the current bowl game system fail to recognize what a playoff system brings.
Everybody loves brackets. It's part of the reason why March Madness, the World Cup and the NFL playoffs are so wildly popular.
College football could hang onto the pageantry and tradition everybody loves and create the playoff atmosphere everybody is dying to see.
That isn't to say bowls should disappear. They can transform the BCS bowls into the first round of the playoff system and leave the non-BCS bowls intact.
College football is missing out on a huge opportunity by not having a playoff system. All of the nonsense and controversy surrounding the bowls would die down.
We would also get to see more marquee matchups. Getting a chance to see LSU three times in the postseason should be wildly attractive to college football, as it's no secret that it is a money making enterprise first and foremost.
Regardless of who wins the BCS Title Game or how spectacular any given bowl is, we still won't know for sure who the best team in the nation is.
No system is perfect, but the imperfections of the current system are so fixable that it's frustrating to see the complacency being exhibited.
