Texas A&M: OL Joseph Villavisencio Dies in Crash After Day of Serving Community
“From the outside looking in, you can't understand it. And from the inside looking out, you can't explain it."
As a member of Texas A&M University, the above quote is the best way to put what it means to be a Fighting Texas Aggie into words. It isn’t just a place to attend college, it is home. The students who attend the University aren’t just people who help fill up a lecture hall, they are your family.
Today, we lost a member of our family.
Joseph Villavisencio, a senior offensive lineman for the Aggies, lost his life when his vehicle struck an 18-wheeler head on when he attempted to dodge a buzzard in the road 40 miles outside of College Station. He was only 22 years old.
After finishing the final practice for the Aggies before their upcoming bowl game against Northwestern, Villavisencio as well as other teammates donated their time to deliver gifts to needy families for Christmas at a local shelter. After helping out the community, he was headed home to Jacksonville, Texas to spend Christmas with his family.
As a football player, Villavisencio saw limited action during his three-year varsity career with the Aggies, but his presence was constantly felt among his teammates and coaches, who saw what an amazing person that he was.
According to ESPN, former head coach Mike Sherman described Joseph as a person “who would do anything for anybody.”
Today Sherman, members of the coaching staff, teammates and fellow students mourn the loss of an outstanding individual who always put others first and was nothing less than an incredible young man.
The Aggies play in the Meineke Car Care Bowl on December 31st.
