MWC Commish Speaks Up About BCS AQ Yet Again: When Is Enough, Enough?
The Mountain West has been consistently the best conference in the country that doesn’t receive an automatic bid to a BCS bowl.
Commissioner Craig Thompson recently applied to join that group after his conference met all of the criteria for becoming a BCS conference.
Now he is saying that the BCS should completely do away with automatic qualifying bids.
“The commissioners that I’ve spoken to, I think there’s strong sentiment that there may not be automatic qualifiers,” Thompson said. ”I would rather eliminate automatic qualifiers across the board over us getting automatic qualifier status for the next two years.”
He is obviously looking out for the best interests of his conference, but this is starting to get a little ridiculous.
Does the Mountain West have a better BCS record than the ACC? Yes.
Does it have multiple higher ranked teams than the Big East champion? Yes.
The only problem is that the only teams to have gone to BCS bowls from the MWC—Utah, TCU and Boise State—will be in different conferences by 2013.
With those schools leaving, the Mountain West is not better than either of the aforementioned conferences.
Plus, are we really going to start listening to the second-rate conferences? The only thing Thompson’s complaining does is get people to start talking about changes.
But changes are already supposed to happen to the BCS in 2013. It’s not going to be a playoff and until the other conference commissioners all get together and say we want one, it simply won’t happen.
Going on about what your conference deserves when it’s losing its best members is foolish and a waste of time.
Sticking up for the Mountain West is one thing, but what Craig Thompson is doing now is just annoying and pointless.
