WWE: Will the World Title Matches at WrestleMania 28 Be Badly Overshadowed?
We’re roughly a month away from the Royal Rumble, and thus, the road to WrestleMania has officially begun.
Although most of us have come up with our own ideas about which matches will take place at the WWE’s flagship pay-per-view, the truth is that there is only match confirmed for the show so far: The Rock vs. John Cena.
This epic encounter between one of the biggest stars of the Attitude Era and the face of pro wrestling today is arguably the most anticipated match in WWE history. It will undoubtedly get more promotion and more hype than any other match on the WrestleMania 28 card.

There is one other match, however, that will also get a ton of build and a great spot on the card: The Undertaker defending “The Streak” in what could potentially be the last match of his career.
Though it’s obviously possible (and maybe even probable) that Undertaker competes beyond WrestleMania 28, the energy surrounding his WrestleMania match, coupled with the excitement surrounding The Rock vs. Cena, has the potential to do something that WWE officials really cant afford to have happen—and that’s overshadowing the World Heavyweight and WWE Championship matches.
Realistically speaking, I don’t think the WWE has any choice but for that to happen when it comes to Rock/Cena. Whether we like it or not, this match features two of the biggest names in pro wrestling history, and as a result, it will get the best spot on the card, a.k.a. the main event.
I don’t really have a huge problem with that, but I might if The Rock vs. Cena and The Undertaker defending “The Streak” overshadow the two World title matches too much.
Like I said, in the case of The Rock vs. Cena, I already know it’s going to happen and have made my peace with it. But when it comes to The Undertaker’s undefeated streak—and especially if he faces Triple H again—there is absolutely no reason to have that match take priority over the WWE and World Heavyweight Championship matches.
I understand, respect and appreciate everything that The Undertaker has done for the business and think he should be able to handpick his opponent at Wrestlemania 28. But at the same time, the focus of this year’s show should be on the new talent that is going to propel the WWE into 2013 and beyond.
Guys like CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Dolph Ziggler and Wade Barrett should be competing for World titles at WrestleMania 28, and not just competing for them—they should be given the spotlight as well.
Unfortunately, I don’t think that’ll be the case.
I just look back to this year’s WrestleMania pay-per-view, when the relatively unproven Alberto Del Rio was competing for the World Heavyweight Championship. Despite the fact he was going against a future WWE Hall of Famer like Edge in the last match of his storied career, the match was relegated to the show opener.
Of course, there are far worse spots on the card to be in. But I have to think that the placement of ADR/Edge had a lot to do with the fact that Del Rio wasn’t considered a bona fide top star at the time, even though he had just won the biggest Royal Rumble match in history.
That’s what’s got me worried.
What if CM Punk is defending his WWE Championship against someone like Dolph Ziggler (my dream matchup) at WrestleMania 28? Do you honestly think that match is going to get more promotion and a better spot on the card than Undertaker defending his streak?
I sure don’t.
Well, what if, on the SmackDown side, Daniel Bryan somehow makes it all the way to the show as World Heavyweight Championship and defends his title against Wade Barrett (a possible Royal Rumble winner)? Or how about Bryan vs. Randy Orton?
Regardless of what the exact World title matches are, I simply can’t see them taking priority over The Rock vs. Cena or The Undertaker vs. (Superstar A) when you consider what happened at WrestleMania 27.
At that pay-per-view, who were the two best spots on the card given to? Oh yeah, Triple H vs. The Undertaker and The Miz vs. Cena, which featured an altercation between The Rock and Cena.
If that show was any indication, it seems pretty clear to me that The Rock, Cena, Triple H and Undertaker will once again be the top priorities at WrestleMania 28.
They will get the focus, they will get the attention, they will get the spotlight, and most importantly, they will overshadow the World title matches, which will feature the building blocks of the WWE’s future.
Oh, and in case you don't believe me, just read this.
