2012 MLB Free Agents: Ranking Prince Fielder and Best Sluggers Available

Patrick ClarkeDec 22, 2011

Although Albert Pujols has already signed a massive deal with the Angels, good for 10 years and $250 million, the MLB free agent sweepstakes isn't over by a long shot. Plenty of struggling teams are still in the mix for big-time players, and you can bet that at least one or two squads will walk away a game-changing hitter.

These veteran sluggers have proven their worth and might just be the piece that lifts a surprising franchise in 2012:

No. 3: Carlos Pena

Pena played well for the Chicago Cubs in 2011, racking up 28 homers and 80 RBIs while only batting .225. He'll turn 34 next May, but he still has the experience to step up for a calling team.

Pena's .462 slugging percentage wasn't all that amazing in the National League last season, but his HR numbers cannot be denied. The first baseman ranked 14th in the NL in home runs, hitting the exact same amount (28) as he did in 2010 with the Tampa Bay Rays.

No. 2: Carlos Beltran

Beltran batted slightly better than Pujols and Prince Fielder in 2011, hitting .300 for the season and going yard 22 times in 142 games. However, Beltran only hit seven homers after coming to San Francisco from the New York Mets midseason.

Beltran posted 84 RBIs as well last season, but he was far from dominant enough to convince the Giants to go all-in for him this offseason.

According to  CBSSports.com's Scott Miller, the Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Indians have legitimate interest in the 34-year-old Beltran for 2012.

No. 1: Prince Fielder

The seven-year MLB veteran is just 27 years old, and he hit 38 home runs in 2011, the fifth most in the major leagues. Fielder also finished right behind the LA Dodgers' Matt Kemp in RBIs, posting 120 last season.

The first baseman is still available despite remaining one of the hottest names on the market since the season ended last October. Fielder ranked 12th in the NL in hits (170) last season and 15th in the NL in batting average (.299)

According to CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman, the Seattle Mariners made an offer to Fielder earlier this week.
