Daniel Bryan and the Worst Champions in Wrestling History
They may have been a champion, but may have not been the best title run. A short run, a weak run, a run for no explanation and or course, a run that totally made us mad along the way.
For some, the idea of their "hero" holding the belt was a good thing. But in the words of Triple H, was it really the best thing for business?
There have been hundreds of champions over the years in different federations, territories and promotions. Some were the best we ever saw (Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, Rick Martel). Others, well, let's just say there are still questions about them.
Here are some of the worst, or should we say most "interesting" title runs on wrestling history.
They may not be for the world title or WWE or AWA, but they show how a wrestlers is given a title and doesn't do much with it while they have it.
I have always thought the person chasing the title holder was in better position than the one keeping the belt from everyone else, maybe with the exception of a few historically great mat men.
Here is the list for us to discuss.
Andre the Giant
1 of 24I am not upset Andre won the WWF Title; I am angered by how it was done.
Andre turning heel in my estimation was one of the worst things in wrestling history.
I understand the "passing of the torch" thing and was old enough to understand the raw emotion and the lead to WrestleMania III, but I was not impressed.
David Arquette
2 of 24I know this was about promoting a movie.
The idea of someone as odd and as unseasoned as David Arquette winning the WCW Title just made me toss my cookies.
Daniel Bryan
3 of 24You knew he was going to be champion. Let's all get over it.
Bryan was a success in ROH and now is a success in WWE.
He has great mat skills but lacks mic work.
He is not a likable as other WWE characters, which makes it hard for us to like this title reign.
Chyna
4 of 24Everyone relax on this one.
Chyna winning the Intercontinental Title was a cool thing, but seriously.
There hasn't been another woman to capture a men's title since and with the ability of Kharma or size of Bertha Faye, you would have expected another woman to challenge for one by now.
ODB taking on Robbie E in TNA would be interesting.
DDP
5 of 24He won the WCW Title three times. He worked hard and he put in his time while moving up the ranks of professional wrestling in the AWA first, then WCW and eventually WWE.
But he was Eric Bischoff's boy, having lived in the same neighborhood and his title reigns were uneventful.
Ric Flair even referred to it in his book, "To Be The Man."
Yes, he had a hot wife and he was a fan favorite, but what did he really accomplish as a world champion?
I was never a fan of his work.
Dolph Ziggler
6 of 24His World Title reign was awful because it was so short.
Ziggler deserves a better fate.
Hopefully, he will feud with CM Punk and the title will come his way again.
Eric Embry
7 of 24He was a bleeder, an average wrestler and could sell better than anyone in World Class Championship Wrestling.
Eric Embry was the classic overachiever who garnered goodwill by writing great scripts and understanding the ins and outs of the business.
He bled, he played the hero and he played the heel well in his career.
Ezekiel Jackson
8 of 24Big Zeke has fallen pretty far.
When he won the Intercontinental Title, it looked like he was going to challenge for the World Title, but he was robotic and had two or three moves.
He was also a transitional champion, one to fill the void so Cody Rhodes could touch singles gold.
David Flair
9 of 24He was never as talented as his father.
The storyline never worked.
He was never believable. And Flair vs. Flair was as bad as any other failed gimmick in wresting history.
Now ask me how I feel about David Flair winning the United States Heavyweight Title.
Ronnie Garvin
10 of 24Rugged regional champion in WCW. He was a favorite in the South, but could never garner attention in northern venues.
Beat Ric Flair for the World Title, but lost it in Chicago a few months later.
This may have been one of the first times WCW realized heels were cheered more often than faces in the heavily populated WWF areas of the country.
Jeff Hardy
11 of 24As the TNA Champion, he was a nothing.
Strung out and out of sorts, he made a mockery of everything a champion should be.
Hardy has worked his way back to "playing" condition. Hopefully, he can restore credibility to his name and his legacy.
He still has a chance to be one of the best ever in TNA.
The Iron Sheik
12 of 24He was the link that connected to the rise of Hulk Hogan and Hulkamania.
But he deserved a better fate.
Sheik was a better wrestler than people gave him credit for. A strong, barrel-chested wrestler who was supposedly a bodyguard for the Shah of Iran.
He needed more time as champion before the belt was taken off him. He was a connector champion who linked Bob Backlund to Hulk Hogan, mainly because Backlund opposed Hogan becoming the new champion.
Kerry Von Erich
13 of 24He was a legend in WCCW and the NWA. A former World Heavyweight Champion who won the title after taking his late brother David's slot in the pecking order.
Kerry was as talented as anyone and could have been another Curt Hennig. He was overcome by personal demons in his career.
Von Erich held the World Title for three weeks before giving Ric Flair his title back. It was a championship he should never have gotten, mainly because he was not ready.
Lex Luger
14 of 24He beat Hulk Hogan for the WCW Title.
He was a great star, a fan favorite and one of the most robotic men in wrestling.
Luger won many national and regional titles, but his world title reign wasn't anything exciting.
Marc Mero
15 of 24Is it odd that he looked almost as pretty as his real-life wife, Sable?
Marc Mero was a boxer and then turned to wrestling. He started out as "Johnny B. Badd" and beat Lex Luger for the US Title.
He moved to the WWF and won the Intercontinental Championship and lost to Triple H.
He was a mid-card wrestler who had a decent run, but he could not compete with his ultra-hot wife.
Renegade
16 of 24Here is a guy in the wrong place at the wrong time. Rick Williams was signed by WCW because of his likeness to the Ultimate Warrior.
When he came to the ring, he imitated Warrior with some of the same moves and beat Arn Anderson for the World Television Championship.
Once he lost the title, Williams declined in the ranks, was basically a jobber and then left the company.
He was with WCW for three years. He committed suicide in 1999 at the age of 34.
Tommy Rich
17 of 24At the time, he was the hottest thing in the NWA. A blond wrestler with a Southern drawl and great skills. And could have been one of the best.
They awarded him the NWA Title way too early in his career and he never got back to the stardom he enjoyed.
He was a great regional competitor and tag champion.
But he was always a shell of himself after winning the NWA's highest honor.
Robbie E.
18 of 24He is the current TNA World Television Champion.
Does anyone really care?
The Television champion should be one who defends the title each week and gives it respectability.
We have not seen that in TNA in a long time.
Vince Russo
19 of 24Another in a long line of awful mistakes by WCW in its downfall.
Vince Russo needs the WCW Title around his waist as much as I do.
It was one of the worst moments in wrestling history.
Sgt. Slaughter
20 of 24When Sarge won the WWF title as an Iraqi sympathizer, it was one of the lowlights of WWF history.
Sgt. Slaughter stands for Old Glory and America.
It was a bad idea to make a hero as Slaughter turn heel like that.
James Storm
21 of 24It was a grave injustice to everyone.
Bobby Roode should have been TNA Champion to begin with. James Storm should never have taken on Roode after beating Kurt Angle one week prior to claim the title.
TNA has a funny way of supporting its best wrestlers.
Storm has been dealing with a concussion the last six weeks and just got back in the ring.
He deserves another shot at the title.
Jack Swagger
22 of 24He is nothing more than a jobber.
I'm still trying to figure out why he had the World Title in the first place.
What has he done lately besides being a bidder for Vickie Guerrero, feuding with Jerry Lawler and Booker T and getting his butt handed to him by Sheamus.
Hmmm.
Val Venis
23 of 24Hellooooo Ladies.
Val Venis was the Intercontinental Champion for like a cup of coffee.
He was a mid-card wrestler with a twisted porn-star gimmick that made him look "larger" than life.
His "rise" in the ranks lasted half as long as his stay in the WWF.
Eric Young
24 of 24No one is happier than I am that Young is no longer the TNA Television champion.
Young is a great competitor and has some great skills, but the "crazy" gimmick had to go.
Wrestling Scott Baio!
Seriously!
