6 Last-Minute Christmas Gifts To Get the MMA Fan in Your Life
It's that time of year again as Christmas is coming this Sunday.
Now if you're like most people, myself included, you still have a couple gifts to get for those special someones in your life. But what do you get someone on short notice when they're an MMA fan as well? Well, this list is just for you—here are some quick ideas for the last-minute shopper.
Now while some of these may end up being a bit pricey, they make do in a pinch. I did say these were the last-minute ideas, not the cheapest ideas after all. With how close we are to Christmas, expect to pay a little extra for express shipping or for fighting people in stores as you try to get the last item in stock.
UFC: Ultimate 100 Greatest Fight Moments
1 of 6Price: $11.99 on Amazon
Just before UFC 100, Spike aired a five-night special running down the greatest moments in the promotion's history up to that point. Fighters give their insight into the matches they were involved in, as well as their favorite fights to watch.
It's a great collection of moments and a great stocking stuffer for newer MMA fans who may have only recently started watching the sport.
UFC: Ultimate 100 Greatest Fights
2 of 6Price: $ 23.49 on Amazon
Now if the Greatest Moments DVD was a stocking stuffer, the DVD collection of the actual fights is a tree buster of a gift. This collection contains the actual full-length fights from the Great Moments DVD and is a perfect way to immerse yourself in MMA. The fights are counted down from 100 to 1 and are spread over multiple discs.
The only real problem with the set is that only a few select matches have any kind of background into the match or the pre-fight vignette, which makes the Moments DVD a perfect match for this set, as you can see what caused each match to make the list.
What's even better is that the price has gone down significantly from when it was originally released.
Tickets to a MMA Event
3 of 6Price: Varies depending on ticket price and travel costs
The ultimate gift for any MMA fan is being able to watch live a fantastic match card. Of course, the biggest issue with this gift will involve price and travel issues, yet there are ways to make it work.
If you can't afford going to a Strikeforce or UFC event, where ticket prices can get into the thousands of dollars, there are always local promotions that have events going. With a little research, you can get tickets for a couple people under a couple hundred bucks and you save on travel as well since it's usually a closer venue.
Yet if you have the money and desire to see an event from the bigger promotions, you can't go wrong with some of the shows that are coming up.
The only other issue with getting tickets to a bigger promotion is that the fine print on posters and in commercials, such as “Card Subject to Change,” happens quite a bit in a sport like MMA. So don't be surprised to see a different main event than what you were expecting and be ready to return the tickets if the fan you were buying for had their heart set on seeing their favorite fighter and now can't.
As for the travel arrangements, have a hotel in mind or already booked and plane tickets ordered to really show the care and preparation that you put into this gift, because the person you're giving it to will really appreciate it.
UFC Action Figures/Octagon Playset
4 of 6Figure Price: $5-$20 on Amazon; $15 on UFC store
Octagon Price: $15-$50 on Amazon; $100 on UFC store
For the kids or kids at heart, UFC action figures are great gifts. And these aren't the immobile figures from 15 years ago; these figures have multiple joints of articulation, which allows the player to pull off submissions or strikes.
If you're going to buy an Octagon, buy it on Amazon as you won't find a cheaper price and you have different options of size for the playset, from a smaller basic set to a deluxe scale Octagon.
As for picking the figures, there are almost 50 different fighters to choose from, including Brock Lesnar, Tito Ortiz, Chuck Liddell, Wanderlei Silva and even a Dana White figure. So the options are aplenty and your young MMA fan will love them as gifts.
UFC Undisputed 2010
5 of 6Price: $15 on Amazon $20 new on Gamestop
I would have put Undisputed 3 on the list if it weren't a couple months from being released, but even still, UFC Undisputed 2010 still holds up pretty well in comparison to the previous installment in the series.
The game includes a huge roster of fighters and improved fighting mechanics, which makes the game really user friendly. The game also allows new fans of the sport to learn some intricacies of the sport, like position and submission names as well as who some current fighters are.
Even the price is good, as $20 is for a new edition of the game while you can find much cheaper editions at you local game store or even online. Add to the fact that there are still plenty of guys fighting online, and the game has an incredibly high replay value.
UFC 141 on PPV
6 of 6Price: $50 standard; $60 HD
If all else fails and you can neither afford nor get any of the previous ideas, you can always order the PPV that airs the Saturday after Christmas. When you have a card headlined by a title eliminator match between returning Brock Lesnar and UFC debuting Alistair Overeem, a lightweight battle between Donald Cerrone and Nate Diaz, and a Welterwieght bout between Jon Fitch and Johnny Hendricks, you're in for a heck of a night.
Another reason for ordering the card is that the New Year's weekend card has a history of being pretty entertaining. Just look at last year's card headlined by the first rematch between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard as evidence.
Plus, for the price you can't go wrong with the entertainment that your loved one and you will get from watching the event for few hours that it's on, truly in the spirit of Christmas.
