College Basketball Predictions: Odds of Each Undefeated Team Going Perfect

Josh SchochDec 21, 2011

It's been over a decade since a team has gone undefeated during the college basketball regular season.

But, with six teams still unbeaten there, is a chance we will see it happen this season.

Syracuse, Louisville, Baylor, Missouri, Indiana and Murray State are all yet to lose.

Five teams have come close to going undefeated in the last 10 years, losing only one game. Memphis almost did in 2007-08, George Washington in 2005-06, both Stanford and Saint Joesph's (who lost their first game in the Atlantic 10 tournament) in 2003-04 and Illinois in 2004-05.

Going perfect for a whole season, including the winning the championship, is next to impossible, with only seven teams ever doing so. The feat has not been accomplished since Indiana in 1976.

With the fact that the top teams are clustered more heavily now and the fact that there are more games during the season, having a perfect championship season is almost impossible. Instead we will settle for a perfect regular season, not counting conference or postseason tournaments.

These six teams are the only ones who have a chance to go perfect during the 2011-12 season. But just how good of a chance do they have?

Murray State 20:1

1 of 6

Record: 12-0

Conference: Ohio Valley

AP Ranking: 22

Key wins: at No. 20 Memphis

Remaining tests: Eastern Kentucky, at Tennessee Tech

The Murray State Racers have started off the season well, behind one of the leading scorers in the country in Isaiah Canaan. Big man Ivan Aska  and guard Donte Poole are also key contributors.

This team has a lot of upperclassmen, with Canaan being a junior and Aska and Poole being seniors. With only three freshmen and no sophomores, this may be the school's best chance at making some noise.

After defeating Memphis on the road, this team won its only scheduled game against a ranked team (which could change, of course). This team has a good chance at a perfect regular season because they play in such a weak conference and because of their leadership.

However, they still must win 16 games to do so.

Indiana 500:1

2 of 6

Record: 11-0

Conference: Big Ten

AP Ranking: 17

Key wins: vs No. 1 Kentucky, vs Butler, at North Carolina State

Remaining tests: vs/at No. 2 Ohio State, at No. 14 Wisconsin, vs/at No. 19 Michigan, vs.at No. 20 Michigan State, vs No. 24 Illinois

The Indiana Hoosiers were unranked and unnoticed in the college basketball world this year until they upset undefeated Kentucky on December 10.

Led by big men Cody Zeller and Victor Oladipo, the team has five members averaging double-digit points per game. Having workhorses up front help guards Jordan Hulls and Verdell Jones III rack up assists, while dropping buckets of their own.

This is a balanced team that still has a lot of tough games coming up. Without contributions from every player every night they will undoubtedly lose at least once this season.

Missouri 200:1

3 of 6

Record: 11-0

Conference: Big 12

AP Ranking: 9

Key wins: vs No. 18 California*, vs Notre Dame*, vs Villanova*

Remaining tests: at/vs No. 7 Baylor, at/vs No. 11 Kansas, vs No. 24 Illinois

The Missouri Tigers have had an impressive season, thus far, after barely reaching the rankings at No. 25 in the preseason poll.

The Tigers rely heavily on guard-play to carry them, as five of their six leading scorers being guards. Phil Pressey is a great distributor, averaging six assists per game, but he also kicks in 8.6 points per night as well.

Height is a big concern for the Tigers, however, as they don't have a single player listed at 6'10" or taller. Having another big man to help Ricardo Ratliffe would be a dream come true for the Tigers, as he is already shooting 77 percent from the floor. But, they could use someone to draw the defense away from him.

Baylor 30:1

Record: 10-0

Conference: Big 12

AP Ranking: 6

Key wins: vs San Diego State

The Baylor Bears have been underrated since the preseason, and I have been an advocate of them since Perry Jones III came back to school.

With big men in Jones, Quincy Acy and freshman Quincy Miller, this team may have the best frontcourt in the nation. All three of these guys are big, athletic and talented. They run the floor well, and they consistently bully smaller defenders inside.

It's incredibly hard to stop this team because they have three great big men.

Pierre Jackson leads the team's backcourt, and he is a great player who can help lead this team through the season. With only two great teams in their conference to rival them, the Bears might have the best chance of any team from a power conference of going undefeated.

Louisville 100:1

5 of 6

Record: 10-0

Conference: Big East

AP Ranking: 4

Key wins: at Butler, vs No. 19 Vanderbilt (overtime), vs Memphis

Remaining tests: at/vs No. 1 Syracuse, at No. 3 Kentucky, vs No. 9 Connecticut, at No. 10 Marquette, at/vs No. 13 Pittsburgh, vs No. 16 Georgetown

This Louisville Cardinals team is very balanced and deep team, but they have a tough Big East-schedule ahead of them.

Led by point guard Peyton Siva, who averages 10.6 points and 6.8 assists per game, this team has only been challenged once—by Vanderbilt.

And, despite inconsistent playing time for most players, this team is now ready to take on their tough schedule.

Unfortunately, the Cardinals are not very tall and have only two players listed above 6'8." That could be a problem when they play some of the best teams in some of the most hostile environments of the country.

Syracuse 60:1

6 of 6

Record: 11-0

Conference: Big East

AP Ranking: 1

Key wins: vs No. 9 Florida, at North Carolina State, vs Virginia Tech

Remaining tests: vs/at No. 4 Louisville, vs/at No. 9 Connecticut, vs No. 10 Marquette, vs No. 13 Pittsburgh, vs No. 16 Georgetown

Jim Boeheim's tough 2-3 defense is the backbone of this Syracuse team, allowing 70 points only twice.

The team also has a good offensive attack that is led by Kris Joseph, Dion Waiters and Brandon Triche, who are the only three players on the team to average double-digit points per game.

Point guard Scoop Jardine leads the attack, distributing the ball well. He averages four assists per game and sets the tempo for this team.

While the team is very talented, going undefeated through their Big East schedule is incredibly difficult and there is only a slim chance of that happening this year.
