WWE: The 10 Absolute Worst Wrestling Matches of 2011
As much as I like to criticize the WWE for everything it does wrong, quality wrestling is something it got right in 2011.
Well, for the most part.
Though we got several classics like Triple H vs. The Undertaker at WrestleMania 27 and John Cena vs. CM Punk at Money in the Bank, we also had a boatload of stinkers this year.
That's nothing out of the ordinary because along with the good comes plenty of bad. But 2011 may have brought us too many matches that literally made me cringe out of sheer agony.
Here are the 10 absolute worst WWE matches of 2011.
10. Divas Title: Eve vs. Michelle McCool vs. Natalya vs. Layla (Royal Rumble)
1 of 10Singles matches between the Divas have been bad enough in recent years, so imagine what happens when you double the amount of participants in a Divas Championship match.
Yeah, the results aren't too pretty.
At the Royal Rumble way back in January, Eve, Michelle McCool, Natalya and Layla were all just kind of thrown into a Fatal 4-Way for the title—and the match turned out to be a complete and utter mess.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter ranked this match as a DUD and gave it the lowest rating of every WWE match in 2011.
I really didn't think this match was too bad the first time I saw it, but I watched that video again and realized that it is pretty atrocious.
9. Sin Cara Azul vs. Sin Cara Negro (Hell in a Cell)
2 of 10What a disappointing match.
The WWE built up the feud between the two Sin Cara to be such a huge deal, but when the two finally met one-on-one in the ring at Hell in a Cell, the results were far from impressive.
You would think that two luchadores would be able to get the crowd into the match with their high-flying style, but neither Sin Cara was able to do that.
The crowd was completely dead throughout most of the bout, and two guys who should have torn the house down wound up having a pretty bad much.
We saw much worse throughout 2011, but given that both Sin Caras were really expected to deliver here, it was hard to sit through a rather boring bout between two guys with the same gimmick and same attire.
8. World Heavyweight Championship: The Big Show vs. Mark Henry (WWE TLC)
3 of 10The World Heavyweight Championship match between Mark Henry at The Big Show at Vengeance was terrible, except for the superplex spot at the end.
Their next pay-per-view match at Survivor Series was equally as bad, with the only noteworthy spot that took place during that bout being Show's huge elbow drop.
But the third PPV encounter between these two at WWE TLC on Sunday was the worst match of what was an awful PPV series, wrestling-wise.
The TLC bout between Show and Henry lasted all of five minutes. It featured slow and plodding action and it was pretty clear that Henry was limited in what he could do.
Sure, we can put the blame for this match being so bad on Henry's injury, but that doesn't matter.
The match sucked because big-guy-vs.-big-guy matches hardly ever work, and the fact that the first two PPV matches between Show and Henry weren't any good should have made WWE officials realize that having a third one probably wasn't a great idea.
7. The Bella Twins vs. Kelly Kelly and Eve
4 of 10I picked this random match from Raw back on May 9, but realistically speaking, you could put just about any match featuring the Bella Twins vs. Eve and Kelly here.
After all, they probably had about 20 tag-team matches against each other throughout 2011, and none of them were any good.
This feud between a set of twins who can't wrestle and two hot baby face Divas who can't really wrestle either was seemingly never-ending, and it never got any better.
The Bella Twins couldn't sell or make their offensive attacks look anything close to good, Eve still hasn't connected with a dropkick yet and all Kelly Kelly did was scream a lot.
Kelly/Eve vs. the Bellas kind of reminded of Hornswoggle vs. Chavo Guerrero from a couple of years ago—they consistently had matches against one another, but hardly anyone wanted to watch them.
6. Country Whipping Match: Cole and Swagger vs. Lawler and Ross (Extreme Rules)
5 of 10I promise this won't be the last match involving these four men that you'll find on this list.
Michael Cole, Jack Swagger, Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross all found themselves participating in some horrendous matches in 2011, bouts that to this day I still can't believe actually took place.
There are dozens of people these matches have to get approval from before they actually happen—from the creative team to, most importantly, Vince McMahon—yet apparently no one spoke up and said, "Hey, a Country Whipping match featuring three announcers probably isn't a good idea."
So, at Extreme Rules, that's exactly what we got.
I can't find a video of the entire match on YouTube, so consider that your early Christmas present.
5. Divas Championship: Kelly Kelly vs. Brie Bella (Over the Limit)
6 of 10I'm really not trying to pick on Kelly Kelly and Brie Bella, but those two simply don't mesh well.
The only Divas matches that are really even watchable these days have to feature either Beth Phoenix or Natalya so that one of those two can carry the match.
When it's just Brie and Kelly Kelly in the ring on pay-per-view, all the ingredients are there for the match to turn into a total botch-fest.
Horrible execution of moves, bad selling and hardly any entertainment.
Kelly Kelly and Brie are nice to look at, but they lack the chemistry that is necessary to be wrestling for the Divas Championship on a PPV stage.
By the way, their match at Money in the Bank was just as bad.
4. "Kiss My Foot" Match: Jerry Lawler vs. Michael Cole (Over the Limit)
7 of 10Brutal. Just brutal.
Most of us thought that the feud between WWE announcers Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler would come to a conclusion at WrestleMania 28.
But, no. The WWE decided to waste even more time on this rivalry by extending it two more pay-per-views until Over the Limit in May.
There was more, though. The creative team also thought it would be fantastic booking to make this match a "Kiss My Foot" match in which the loser had to kiss the winner's foot.
That would lead to this gem of a photo and me spewing my dinner all over the place.
I could hardly bare watching this match, but I'm sure somewhere in the country someone with a really weird foot fetish was really enjoying this bout.
3. "I Quit" Match for WWE Championship: The Miz vs. John Cena (Over the Limit)
8 of 10This easily had to be the worst pay-per-view match for a major WWE title in all of 2011.
Though The Miz vs. John Cena at WrestleMania 27 was incredibly disappointing, their next bout in an "I Quit" match at Over the Limit was 10 times worse.
The Miz and Alex Riley beat the holy hell out of Cena in what was essentially a handicapped match for roughly 20 minutes; and then Cena had arguably the biggest "Super Cena" moment of his career by coming back from a huge a**-whooping only to make The Miz say, "I quit."
It was like Cena totally forgot about the fact that two huge guys beat the crap out of him for an entire match, so he just decided to act like nothing happened to him and come back to get the victory.
Classic "Super Cena" here.
2. Divas Mistletoe on a Pole Match (Smackdown, Nov. 29)
9 of 10You should have known how god awful this match was gonna be just by seeing that the clip was only 2:31.
But then after actually watching the video, there were several more factors that contributed to this crap-fest known as a "Mistletoe on a Pole" match: The Divas were all wearing Christmas outfits, the match itself lasted less than one minute and the prize for winning the match was that the winning Diva got to kiss a superstar of her choosing.
I can't believe I just wrote that.
The Divas division was horrible enough throughout 2011, and this ridiculous gimmick match basically sums up what we got from these women all year long.
Way to go, creative team. It must have been really hard to book such a fantastic and exhilarating match.
1. Michael Cole vs. Jerry Lawler (WrestleMania 27)
10 of 10An announcer in his sixties vs. another announcer who isn't trained to wrestle?
Hmmm. I wonder how this one's gonna turn out.
Seriously, how anyone in the WWE thought it was a good idea to have Jerry Lawler face Michael Cole at WrestleMania 27 is beyond me.
I know that company officials may have wanted to finally give Lawler his WrestleMania match, but they could have given him a bout against someone who, you know, can actually wrestle.
Lawler's match against Cole was as bad as they are as an announce team, and we all know just how terrible they've been together on Raw over the last couple of years.
I wish there was a way to permanently erase this debacle of a match from my memory.
