Ohio State Recruiting: 5 Must-Get Prospects for Urban Meyer
The Ohio State Buckeyes may have had a down season, but the hire of Urban Meyer is already proving to be a fantastic move. His skills in recruiting will allow the Buckeyes to stay relevant during these hard times, but Meyer still has work to do in landing some big name recruits.
Meyer has already stolen recruits that were verbally committed to other schools, and this past weekend he landed Noah Spence, arguably the best defensive end in the class of 2012.
Since Meyer is putting together a good class so quickly, it wouldn't be a surprise if other recruits changed their mind or began to add Ohio State to their list.
There's a lot of time between now and National Signing Day in February, which means Meyer needs to keep at the recruiting trail to make sure the Buckeyes have a strong future.
With that said, here are five players Meyer must get to Ohio State.
Dorial Green-Beckham, WR
The nation's top recruit isn't giving any hints as to where he'll being playing next year, but he's a guy Meyer has to pursue.
According to Rivals.com, Green-Beckham has medium level interest in the Buckeyes, but that's the same amount for a number of teams.
ESPN claims his top teams are from the SEC and Big 12, but as we all know, nothing is set in stone in college football recruiting until a player offers up his signature to a particular school.
Listed at 6'6", 220 pounds, Green-Beckham is going to be a star for whichever team he picks, and that is exactly why he should be No. 1 on Meyer's list.
Stefon Diggs, ATH
Regarded as the best athlete in the class of 2012, Diggs can play wide receiver or running back. He would be a great addition to the Buckeyes since they're losing Dan Herron to graduation.
Meyer has experience using speed guys in various roles, and he would work wonders with Diggs, just as he did with Percy Harvin, Chris Rainey and Jeff Demps at Florida.
Diggs has tremendous talent, and he's going to see the field right away wherever he goes.
The Buckeyes aren't high on his list, but that doesn't mean Meyer shouldn't go after him. Ohio State had a lot of trouble on offense this past season, which is another reason Meyer needs to get Diggs because he'd have an immediate impact.
Kwon Alexander, OLB
The Buckeyes currently have one outside linebacker committed to them, but Alexander is a better player than Josh Perry.
It will be very difficult to pry the Alabama kid out of the south, but all Meyer needs is to get him to visit Ohio State and he can definitely persuade him.
Alexander has superb speed for a linebacker, and the Buckeyes could use him in the future. Rivals.com says Alexander reminds them of Atlanta Falcons Mike Peterson, who is a hard hitting linebacker with a great knowledge of the game. That's exactly what Meyer needs for his future defense.
Listed at 6'2", 212 pounds, Alexander would need to bulk up once he got to Ohio State, but these days that isn't much of a worry.
Cyrus Jones, ATH
According to Rivals.com, Jones visited the Buckeyes this past weekend. However, it still states he has no interest in Ohio State.
This isn't the case though, because ESPN states that the Buckeyes are in the mix. As one of the top athletes available, Jones has the ability to be a returner, receiver, running back or defensive back.
He projects best as a corner, and would fit in well with the Buckeyes. Listed at 5'11", 183 pounds, Jones will need to get stronger, but his skills are superior enough to look past his size right now.
Ohio State needs to land a great defensive back for the class of 2012, which is why Meyer has to make sure Jones chooses the Buckeyes.
Jordan Diamond, OT
The Buckeyes don't have a single 2012 offensive tackle committed to them, and Diamond just so happens to be the top guy on their list at that position.
Listed at 6'6", 291 pounds, Diamond excels at run blocking. The Buckeyes are sure to run the ball a lot, whether it's with the running back or the quarterback.
Diamond is a must for Meyer because he needs to make sure he secures top players at all positions and not just skill players.
Sure, speedster and impact guys are important, but getting the lineman to commit is right there with it. Diamond would boost the Buckeyes class and give them a solid offensive lineman for their future.
