NBA Rumors: Miami Heat Must Avoid Gilbert Arenas
Gilbert Arenas has a wish list of teams that he would like to play for, the Miami Heat being one of them, yet this is a wish the team should not fulfill.
At his peak, Arenas was a prolific scorer, elusive ball-handler and tenacious defender. However, Arenas is on the wrong side of his career and performs in a diminished capacity in all facets of the game.
While it is true that the Heat do not need an all-star to run their offense, they do need a bit more certainty at the point guard position than Arenas can offer. His primary job would be to put the ball in the hands of LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, but is his ego capable of handling such a task?
Better yet, would his presence disrupt the chemistry the Heat have worked so hard to establish? It's a strong possibility, given that Arenas has always been, and remains, a shoot-first point guard. His role in Miami would be significantly different, and it's unclear if it is one that he could not only embrace, but excel at as well.
With Mario Chalmers, Miami knows what it is getting. He is a savvy passer and has no qualms about taking a backseat to the accolades of the Heat's big three. Arenas, despite his drop in effectiveness, has always played a go-to role for his team.
If the Heat obtain Arenas, they will be looking for a capable perimeter player who protects the ball and allows the Big Three to run their course. Should Arenas opt to join Miami, however, he will do so with the idea that he is completing the formation of a big four, even though that just isn't the case.
Shane Battier was a great addition. He is a low-key athlete with an incredible work-ethic, and fits in alongside the Heat's star-studded rotation perfectly. Arenas presents just the opposite.
Miami has enough attention-commanding players on its roster, and adding one more to the fold will prove to be a mistake. Arenas' production suggests he is just the low-key floor general the team needs, but his mindset says otherwise.
Unless the Heat are looking to create an unhealthy team dynamic or desire an athlete whose intentions differ from that of their own, no move is a great move in regards to pursuing Arenas.
