Andre Ward vs. Carl Froch Results: 10 Things We Learned from Super Six Final
Andre Ward's win over Carl Froch on Saturday didn't shake the boxing world but it did cement Ward's rise to the top of the super middleweight division and helped raise his star even more.
Every fight has the ability to teach fans something and this one was no different.
Fans got to watch a match that gave them answers to lingering questions and now we get to overview what was learned.
So here are the top 10 things fans learned from Andre Ward's win in the Super Six World Boxing Classic.
Froch Is a Good Fighter, but Not Great
1 of 10Carl Froch is someone with a decent chin, a decent amount of boxing skill, and a tough attitude.
It is the last thing on that list that has gotten him through so much of the tournament even when he faced arguably better boxers. Froch proved tough and was willing to try and go after Ward the entire night.
Where as lesser men might have broken down, Froch kept going for the victory.
In the older days of boxing this was considered normal, but today it is a rarity to see such a boxer, making Froch all the more refreshing.
Hopefully, he won't be punished to badly for stepping up and losing, so we'll see him on TV again soon.
When Boxing Tries It Can Put Together Some Great Events
2 of 10Some have disparaged the Super Six World Boxing Classic because half of the original contestants dropped out and "ruined" the tournament.
That isn't the case though as fans still got to see some of the greatest fights and can still say that they saw the two best super middleweights fight to prove who the best was.
Making the tournament was no easy feat; to prevent it from coming unglued was probably even harder. But the folks at Showtime did what needed to be done and kept the event going strong, showing that if boxing wasn't so lazy or apathetic the sport could still be relevant.
Events like this would help that statement come true.
Fighting Outside of Hometown Crowds Doesn't Make Sense
3 of 10The fight was big because it had the proper build-up and because it was a big fight for boxing. In fact it was one of the biggest fights that could be made in the sport.
And the attendance was 5,626.
Ward is from California.
Froch is from England.
And the fight took place in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Ward was lucky enough to get all three of his fights in his backyard so it would have been nice to see this fight take place in the UK. Even if it had taken place in California it still would have been better.
With a fight of this magnitude and for the fighters involved the promoters could have easily doubled their money if they had been willing to move it somewhere that made sense.
Ward Is an Olympian Who Didn't Go Bust
4 of 10Plenty of boxers have won Olympic medals and never really done anything to live up to the promise in the professional circuit.
Ward is not one of them. Winning the Super Six proved that Ward was capable of not only boxing effectively as a young man, but as a professional now.
Instead of fighting a bunch of scrubs after the Olympics and then finally facing a real challenge only to lose, Ward has passed every test asked of him and then some.
He has proved that even if the Olympics are no longer a measuring stick for professional success, they don't hurt your chances either.
Dan Goosen Is Going to Be a Happy Man
5 of 10Goosen was willing to risk his fighter's status by entering him into this tournament, and it paid in spades. He now has a bona fide boxing star on his hands.
If Goosen plays his cards right and keeps putting Ward into the right fights, he could have a huge star on his hands. It might even lead to pay-per-view one day.
All Goosen needs to do now is not kill his golden goose.
As long as he doesn't get greedy and stick Ward into a fight with either a fighter who is too big for him or too dangerous he could make some serious money off of his boxer.
Bute Is Next for the Winner
6 of 10After the Super Six got under way Showtime was able to sign Lucian Bute to an exclusive three-fight deal.
Many felt that when the tournament was first made that Showtime had made a mistake by snubbing the Canadian-based boxer. Showtime seems to have realized this and made sure to tie Bute up so that they could televise a fight between the winner and Bute.
It might have been a clever move, but it depends on how well they can market the fight to the public.
If they can properly market it they will be able to succeed in selling it to the public.
Showtime Was Able to Use a Smaller Budget to Outfox HBO
7 of 10Showtime has a tiny budget for boxing when it come to the sport compared to HBO. Yet while HBO was blowing money on mismatches and trying to build stars based on demographics, Showtime just made great fights.
It was the exact opposite attitude from HBO's.
Instead of picking one fighter and putting him on the station while trying to get fans to accept him, just throw a bunch of great fighters together and have one emerge victorious. It is how boxing should be and Showtime was able to figure it out.
Boxing can not only innovate but it can do it for relatively cheap as long as those in power are willing to be creative.
Ward Still Isn't a Superstar
8 of 10Even though Ward won his fight on Saturday it doesn't make him a superstar yet. He may have made himself a name in the sport but if he wants to crossover he may just have to beat someone like Bernard Hopkins to do it.
Ward also might want to let his personality shine through as he seems to be a bit subdued.
Regardless Ward might need a few more key victories before he starts being mentioned by casual fans and the analysts on ESPN SportsCenter.
Ward Is a Great Fighter but Not an Exciting One
9 of 10Ward is a great boxer and if you like technical boxing he is going to deliver.
If you want knockouts and slugfests you might as well not even turn on your TV.
That isn't a bad thing as boxing doesn't need to be toe-to-toe brawls which end in scrambled brain cells. There is a reason it is called the "sweet science" and Ward embodies it.
It may not always be the prettiest thing to watch, but it is something that serious boxing fans can enjoy.
Ward isn't even close to unwatchable though.
Unfortunately he seems to be lacking the natural knockout power that would put him over the top.
Ward Is the Best Supermiddleweight in the World and One of Th Best Boxers P4P
10 of 10This was what the fight was all about—proving who the best at this weight class was.
Ward was able to do just that and in doing so catapulted himself into the top part of the pound-for-pound list. It is what most fighters aspire to and it is something that Ward has finally accomplished.
Now he just needs to hold on to it.
Because in boxing you're only as good as your last fight and even though Ward is on top now the next time he steps into that ring he will have to prove it all over again.
