Florida Gators Football: The Gators' Top 4 Freshmen in 2011

Drew LaingDec 18, 2011

With a 6-6 record in the 2011 regular season, it's tough to pinpoint any positives on a football team.

However, the freshmen for the Florida Gators came through in a big way this season as they proved their worth at their respective positions. Their performances throughout the season helps to reassure Gator fans of the future of this football team for the next few seasons.

Here are the the top four freshmen performers for the Gators in 2011.

4. Jacoby Brissett, QB

1 of 4

When Jacoby Brissett was named the starting quarterback after John Brantley's injury, he was put in a tough position of having to face the LSU Tigers on the road. Although he struggled, it was clear Brissett possessed the talent to be an effective quarterback in the future.

Brissett showed toughness in the pocket and the ability to run effectively if the pocket broke down. He gives the Gators a dual-threat quarterback who could pose some problems for the defense over the next few seasons.

He'll be in a tough position battle with fellow freshman Jeff Driskel after this season; but Brissett is expected to have the upper hand due to his elevated status on the team's depth chart.

3. Hunter Joyer, FB

2 of 4

Coming to the season as the top-rated fullback recruit, Hunter Joyer looked to make an instant impact as the Gators switched to a pro-style offense.

Although he didn't receive many carries throughout the season, Joyer still ran with a lot of power and excellent vision when he did run with the football. Joyer also delivered some timely blocks in both running and passing plays.

And with the de-commitment of Mike Davis, Joyer could be a strong candidate to receive more of the running load, especially if the Gators lack depth at the running back position.

2. Marcus Roberson, CB

3 of 4

Despite his season ending early due to injury, cornerback Marcus Roberson shined as a freshman starter throughout 2011.

Roberson only had one interception, but his presence was felt on the field. You did not see many throws in his direction, and in my opinion, that shows the kind of coverage Roberson provided on the field.

His size and athleticism make him a dangerous defensive back and someone who could make the big play on defense when necessary.

Roberson could very well be the next shut-down corner for the Florida Gators.

1. Pop Saunders, FS

4 of 4

Pop Saunders struggled early but improved as the season went on. Much like Roberson, Saunders coverage abilities improved and he proved himself as a reliable safety for the young Florida secondary.

Saunders had two interceptions this year, including one he returned for a touchdown that helped seal the Gators' win against Furman on November 19th.  His diving interception against South Carolina one week prior also showed off Saunders' playmaking ability.

He was rewarded for his successful season by being named to the 2011 SEC All-Freshman team.

Saunders' future looks bright as he has instilled some consistency in the Gators' secondary.
