Albert Pujols: Angels' Contract Incentives Are Chump Change to The Machine

Kyle VassaloDec 18, 2011

In Albert Pujols' decade-long, $254 million contract with the Angels, $10 million in incentives almost seems like a trivial addition to the monster deal.

Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown reports that Pujols will get $3 million upon reaching the elusive 3,000th hit mark and $7 million for cranking out his 763rd homer.

Now $10 million is nothing to sneeze at, but the ridiculous chunk of change is a drop in the bucket for Pujols.

He's got 2,073 hits and 445 homers, which makes these incentives well within his reach. The 763 home runs would make Pujols the greatest home run hitter of all time, surpassing Barry Bonds' mark of 762.

Pujols has blasted over 30 home runs in each of his first 11 season. He needs 318 to become the home run king, and though it's certainly a lofty goal, Pujols is young enough to get it done.

Averaging 30 home runs throughout his 10-year deal won't be enough to obtain the $7 million, but Pujols is more than capable of going yard 40 times in a season to compensate for an "off-year" of 30 homers.

These contract incentives are the cherry on top of the blockbuster deal, but it's highly unlikely that they will dictate his play whatsoever.

With his pockets as fat as they are and the chance to make baseball history right in front of him, it's hard to believe that he's all that concerned with the bonuses that will be coming his way should he ellipse these milestones.

Upon hitting these marks, he's far more likely to think about cementing his legacy as one of the greatest players in history than the measly $10 million that will be coming his way.
