LSU vs. Alabama Rematch: Why Defense Will Falter in Offensive Explosion
Not a single touchdown was scored in the LSU vs. Alabama snooze fest that took place in the regular season, but both teams will show that their offenses are far from inadequate in the surprisingly high-scoring BCS Title Game.
While a huge portion of LSU's 38.5 PPG come at the hands of their explosive defense and Tyrann Mathieu, Michael Ford and Spencer Ware each have over 700 yards rushing on the season and we all have seen how spectacular Jordan Jefferson can be when he's at his best.
Heisman finalist Trent Richardson gave us a taste of what he's capable of in his first meeting with the Tigers, gaining 169 rushing and receiving yards.
This time around, you can expect him to find the endzone at least once. He was completely snubbed by Heisman voters and is entering this game with a vengeance. LSU's defense couldn't shut down the best back in the nation the last time they faced him and the same will apply in the BCS Title Game.
In their first meeting, Alabama and LSU's combined third-down conversion rate was 8-24. While these are the top two defenses in the country, the embarrassing effort they put forth offensively didn't do either side justice.
Both teams have far more capable offenses than they let on. A 6-3 overtime punt fest isn't in the works here. Nobody should be expecting a shootout like Stanford and Oklahoma State are going to produce in the Fiesta Bowl, but there is no way Les Miles and Nick Saban will allow their offenses to be held at a standstill again.
