Jon Fitch and 5 Other Fighters Who Get Hosed on by Fans No Matter What They Do
It seems that no matter what Jon Fitch does he is hated by MMA fans everywhere. Part of it has to do with the way he doesn't finish fights.
The man has rarely ever seen a win that didn't see the scorecards. Making it worse he won't fight teammate Josh Koscheck. Not willing to fight the best in the world even if they train with you and then complaining about not getting title shots is not the way to make more fans.
Fitch may talk about trying to finish more fights, but actions speak louder than words and his show that he would rather win fights without risking a great lead rather than go for the glory. It isn't something he can be faulted for. Fighters step in the cage to win and get paid and Fitch does both.
At the same time fans help with who get title shots. If they are more willing to pay to see one matchup then a different one. Fitch doesn't seem to realize this or at the very least accept it and because of it he rubs fans the wrong way.
But he isn't the only one. Here are some more fighters who can't seem to get love from the fans no matter what they do.
Josh Koscheck
1 of 5Jon Fitch's teammate seems to get almost as much ire from the fans as Fitch does.
Then again where as Fitch loses fans by being a nice guy who just can't be exciting in the cage, Koscheck seems to have a black hat and curled mustache. He is the quintessential bad guy who just can't seem to say anything right.
He does seem to be able to acquit himself in the cage, though, as he has either won exciting victories or been taken down in defeat. He is even willing to take fights on short notice and is a company man.
It doesn't matter what he does, though, because he still rubs people the wrong way because of his perceived actions and attitude. It stems from his time on The Ultimate Fighter and continues to this day.
He might have tried to become a friendlier fighter at some point, but with the fans' reactions to him decided against it.
Then again, he may just enjoy being cocky.
Georges St-Pierre
2 of 5It seems like fighters who are close to Fitch in some way generate ire with the fans.
It is just a coincidence, but St-Pierre is also given the same criticism that Fitch is. He doesn't finish fights. The worst part is that he is the welterweight champion.
MMA is a brutal sport and most fighters are expected to unleash some incredible finishes. That goes double for champions. They are paid money by fans to show that they are the best in the world.
To fans, that means routinely taking out opponents.
It is something that St-Pierre hasn't done lately. When fans pay to watch a UFC event because of one match and it is for the championship, they want something amazing. St-Pierre constantly has his face plastered on posters and makes serious money because of it.
And until he starts finishing some of his opponents, he will get a certain amount of criticism to match it.
Jake Shields
3 of 5Shields just agitates fans, no matter what he does.
A few might not like his attitude and how he holds himself.
Most probably don't like what he does in the cage, just like with St-Pierre and Fitch.
It isn't surprising, as his fight with St-Pierre was terrible. His standup didn't shine and looked rudimentary at best.
It might not have gotten him heat with the fans so quickly if he had been known for exciting fights before it, but the man is best known for getting his opponents to the mat and stifling them.
He is able to continue to work from a great position on top, mixing his wrestling with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and never letting up.
He may subtly control his opponents, but it is lost on the average viewer and it isn't much fun to watch.
Michael Bisping
4 of 5It doesn't matter if Bisping has a great performance or a terrible one.
Fans will always hate him.
Part of it came from his less-than-humble views when he was on The Ultimate Fighter. Just like Josh Koscheck, it laid the groundwork for fans disliking him.
Then he beat Matt Hamill by a controversial decision. Hamill was well-loved by fans as he was the deaf fighter who had succeeded and made it to the UFC despite his handicap.
Seeing a man overcome something like that and then have it snatched away from the judges didn't help Bisping's image.
He also annoyed fans when he came back to The Ultimate Fighter as a coach against Dan Henderson.
He also caused a little bit of controversy with his post-fight actions against Jorge Rivera. Before that, in the fight, he had hit Rivera with an illegal knee.
No matter how many fights he wins or if he finishes his opponents, he just doesn't win fans.
But it does sell fights.
Brock Lesnar
5 of 5Many might think Chael Sonnen should top the list, but he does have fans who enjoy his antics and his pro wrestling-like promos.
What fans really don't like?
Pro wrestlers who decide to come over to the UFC.
That is exactly what Brock Lesnar did a few years ago and fans hated him for it. When he lost to Mir, many rejoiced.
When he got a title shot with a 2-1 record and a 1-1 record in the UFC, they were outraged.
His antics at UFC 100 after he won also didn't help engender him to the fans.
The worst part is because of his size, Lesnar will never get any credit for any win he earns. If he succeeds, then he was supposed to because he is a genetic freak. If he struggles, then he was exposed.
And when he loses, fans get to point out that he can't hang with the real martial artists.
It may not be fair, but then again, Lesnar's natural physique and aptitude for fighting prove that nothing ever is. He may never get the love, but because he doesn't, he will always get the big paychecks.
