BCS National Championship: 10 Reasons to Love LSU in This Game

Sean MerrimanDec 18, 2011

In less than one month, the two best teams in college football will take in field in what has been a much-anticipated BCS National Championship matchup.

Both LSU and Alabama are known for their defensive toughness, which became more than evident in their 9-6 slugfest back in early November. But both of these teams will now have plenty of time to prepare for one another again, so what will give in the rematch?

LSU took home the victory in the first meeting on Alabama's home field. That has to be one reason why you might believe the Tigers will win this game.

But what are nine other reasons?

Let's break down 10 reasons to love LSU in this year's BCS National Championship Game.

10. Better Track Record

1 of 10

When you take a look at these two team's schedules this season, it is blatantly obvious that LSU has played a more challenging schedule than Alabama.

The Tigers opened the season by playing then-No.3-ranked Oregon on a neutral site, and then played West Virginia and Mississippi State in two of their next three games. In the midst of their SEC schedule, the Tigers played Florida, Auburn, Arkansas, Georgia and, of course, Alabama.

Meanwhile, the Tide's top non-conference game was against Penn State, which was 9-3 this season.

Meanwhile, both Oregon and West Virginia, LSU's top two non-conference opponents, will be playing in BCS bowl games this year.

A better schedule simply makes you better as a team.

9. More Depth

2 of 10

In a BCS championship game when players are going all out, 100 percent on every play after not playing for nearly two whole months, it is very important to have good depth.

This LSU team has just that—and they have it at important positions.

The Tigers have two capable quarterbacks, three very good wide receivers, but most importantly, they have four different running backs who rushed for more than 320 yards this season.

Spencer Ware, Michael Ford, Alfred Blue and Kenny Hilliard combined to rush for more than 2,300 yards on the ground and totaled 30 touchdowns between the four.

It's tough to stop any team that can come at you with so many offensive weapons.

8. Momentum

3 of 10

While Alabama's team was sitting at home during the week of Dec. 3, LSU was putting a beatdown on SEC foe Georgia in the conference title game.

The big win put a perfect cap on what was a memorable season for the Tigers.

They finished a perfect 13-0 this season including that win and are certainly riding a high note heading into this BCS National Championship Game.

Alabama has won three in a row, but that just doesn't compare to LSU's 14-game winning streak dating back to last year.

7. Neutral Field

4 of 10

The last time these two teams played, LSU came out on top with a 9-6 win. But keep in mind, that win came on Alabama's home turf.

If the Tigers came into Tuscaloosa and beat the Tide in their own backyard, why in the world should anyone believe that LSU can't repeat itself on a neutral field?

LSU has proven it can play anywhere, hence the undefeated record this season.

6. Quarterback Experience

5 of 10

Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee have eight combined years of experience between the two of them. Lee started his freshman year, Jefferson started his sophomore and junior season, Lee started this year and now Jefferson is the starter.

Didn't catch that all? Fair enough..To simplify it all—Jefferson and Lee have a lot of experience. On the other hand, Alabama sophomore quarterback A.J. McCarron does not.

This is McCarron's first year as a starter, and it is no easy task for a first year quarterback to start on college football's biggest stage—the BCS National Championship Game.

Jefferson and Lee get the edge in this one.

5. The Honey Badger

6 of 10

When it comes to the most electric playmakers in all of college football, LSU's Tyrann Mathieu, aka The Honey Badger, is the most electric of them all.

Mathieu can turn around the momentum of a game at any time, whether it be with a punt return, interception return or fumble return. He is the fastest player on the football field with the best moves on the football field.

This slideshow is about why people should love LSU in this game.

This man right here is plenty of reason for that!

4. Location

7 of 10

The BCS National Championship Game is being played at the Superdome in New Orleans, which is approximately an hour-and-a-half away from Baton Rouge.

On the other hand, New Orleans is over four hours away from where Alabama plays its home football games.

In other words, this game is essentially a home game for LSU and a road game for Alabama.

LSU already beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa, so wouldn't the Tigers have an advantage now playing near an hour away from their hometown?

3. Alabama Can Not Pass on This Defense

8 of 10

There should be no doubt in anyone's mind who knows anything about college football that LSU has the best secondary in the nation. In fact, it wouldn't be a far stretch to say that both Morris Claiborne and Tyrann Mathieu would start for more than half of the teams in the NFL right now.

Therefore, don't expect Alabama to be able to have success through the air against this dominant secondary.

A.J. McCarron completed 16 passes for 199 yards and an interception the first time these two teams met. He did not complete a single pass to a receiver for more than 20 yards.

Look for LSU to shut down this Alabama offense in the title game.

2. They Already Proved It

9 of 10

This is the rematch.

Remember, LSU has already beaten Alabama, on their home field, in a meeting when both teams were undefeated heading into the game.

LSU has proved itself as a program, as a team.

Of course this one is for all the marbles, but you have to love the favorite, right?

A report card for the entire season comparing these two teams in this year's BCS Championship National Game. The results are 6-3-1 in favor of LSU.

The Tigers have already proved they are the better team in the regular season, and now the college football world will get to see if they can do it again..

Let the best team win!
