Assessing the Odds Each NFL Team Can Win the Super Bowl in the Next 5 Years

Tony SantorsaDec 15, 2011

Winning the Super Bowl is the ultimate goal in the NFL

It doesn't matter if you go 11-5, 16-0 or even 7-9—as long as you win the Super Bowl, you have achieved the ultimate goal.

With that being said, let's take a peek into the future, more specifically the next five years. In five years, we will have five new Super Bowl champions. Do we know who they are? No, not unless we're like Back to the Future II and steal a sports almanac. However, we can certainly make a guess at who they possibly could be.

In that spirit, here are the odds for each NFL team for winning a Super Bowl in the next five years.

Arizona Cardinals

1 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Definitely possible.

The Arizona Cardinals are just three years removed from their first ever Super Bowl appearance and are certainly in a solid position moving forward.

The Cardinals are a young football team with talent all over the field, including Larry Fitzgerald and Patrick Peterson.

However, the biggest weakness for the Cardinals is their quarterback play.

Arizona took a big risk by trading an arm and a leg for Kevin Kolb last offseason, and an ability to perform well ultimately dictates Arizona's chances of winning a Super Bowl in the next five years.

Atlanta Falcons

2 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Very good.

The Atlanta Falcons have a nice core of young players for the upcoming years.

For starters, their quarterback, Matt Ryan, certainly has the talent and potential to emerge as an elite quarterback, while wide receivers Roddy White and Julio Jones can definitely turn into the NFL's top wide receiver duo.

If Ryan, White and Jones continue to flourish together, and if the team can solidify their issues defensively by continuing to get younger and more athletic, then I can see the Falcons making a Super Bowl run sometime soon.

Baltimore Ravens

3 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Extremely good.

I hate to say this, but the only player that's really holding back the Baltimore Ravens is Joe Flacco.

If Flacco can play just come close to an elite level, then the Baltimore Ravens could win a few Super Bowls in the next five years. However, Flacco has been downright awful this season, as it's arguably the worst season of his short NFL career.

All in all, Baltimore's success falls on the shoulders of Flacco.

Buffalo Bills

4 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Not very good—slim to none.

I definitely like what the Buffalo Bills are doing on both sides of the ball, but the only thing that really scares me is quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

In my opinion, the Bills have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL, and they need to take advantage of that. Buffalo needs to figure out if C.J. Spiller is capable of being an elite running back, as they need to plug in someone that can make use of this stellar o-line. I realize that Fred Jackson is still around, but he is getting up there in age, and Spiller needs to step it up immediately.

Also, Ryan Fitzpatrick needs to turn around his career in Buffalo immediately if they want to have any success moving forward. If the Bills and Fitzpatrick work out, then they have to go out and find a new quarterback of the future.

Carolina Panthers

5 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Slim, but hard to tell.

It all depends on if the Carolina Panthers can continue to develop Cam Newton as an NFL quarterback and surround him with talent. If they can do that, then the Panthers will certainly be Super Bowl contenders in the next five years.

Chicago Bears

6 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Decent.

If the Chicago Bears want to win, they need to win now.

The Bears have a very talented defensive group, but it's certainly getting up there in age, as Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs are both over 31 years old.

All in all, if Jay Cutler can play close to an elite level, then I can definitely see the Bears making it to the Super Bowl in the next five years. But that's a big "if."

Cincinnati Bengals

7 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Decent but definitely above average.

I absolutely love what the Cincinnati Bengals are doing, and they need to continue doing it if they want to win in the near future.

The Bengals may not be able to win next year of the year after, but definitely in three to five years they can make a run for it.

The key to Cinci's success is the development of quarterback Andy Dalton, and thus far, it appears that they have something special in their rookie quarterback out of TCU.

If the Bengals continue to develop Dalton, surround him with talent offensively and play solid defense, then they could make a Super Bowl run in a few years.

Cleveland Browns

8 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Not good.

To me, the Cleveland Browns have far too many questions and holes on both sides of the ball that are holding them back from being successful.

For starters, are we even sure that Colt McCoy can be a legitimate NFL quarterback? Not at all.

Until the Browns are sure who their quarterback of the future is, we cannot expect much out of Cleveland.

Dallas Cowboys

9 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Pretty good.

If we just take a look at the Dallas Cowboys' amount of talent, then we should expect multiple Super Bowls out of this group in the next five years.

However, it all depends on Tony Romo and Jason Garrett—can they create a winning culture in Dallas? That remains to be unseen, as this is only year one in the Garrett era in Dallas.

Denver Broncos

10 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Above average.

Wow—now this is a bold one.

I believe that Tim Tebow is a winner and that the Denver Broncos have a very talented defense, which can lead to major success in the upcoming seasons.

However, Tebow needs to continue to develop as an NFL passer, and the Broncos have to continue to infuse their defense with youth while building around the talents of Tebow on the offensive side of the ball.

Detroit Lions

11 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Above average.

I really like where the Detroit Lions are headed, as they're a very young and talented group that can do some special years in the near future.

However, question marks still fall on quarterback Matthew Stafford and the team's offensive line. If they can solidity the offensive line and Stafford can emerge as an elite quarterback, then I can see this team holding up the Lombardi Trophy sometime soon.

Rejoice, Detroit! Your time is almost here!

Green Bay Packers

12 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Almost guaranteed.

We could be on the verge of witnessing the NFL's next dynasty: the Green Bay Packers.

As long as the Packers keep together their key players, Aaron Rodgers, Clay Matthews, B.j. Raji and Greg Jennings, then they will have a very good chance of winning multiple Super Bowls in the next five years.

Houston Texans

13 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Good, definitely not bad.

I really like what the Houston Texans are doing with Wade Phillips and the team's defense.

As long as Phillips stays the team's defensive coordinator and they continue to flourish defensively as well continuing to be one of the league's top offensive attacks, then I can see a Super Bowl in Houston's near future.

Indianapolis Colts

14 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Unknown.

I have no idea where to start on this one, but I am going to make this as simple as possible.

If Peyton Manning is able to play again, then it's possible. If Peyton Manning is done, then not a chance in hell. However, if the team drafts Andrew Luck and builds around him, then it's possible.

We will just have to wait and see on this one!

Jacksonville Jaguars

15 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Not good, very slim.

I am going out on a limb on this one and going to boldly predict that Blaine Gabbert will end up being labeled as a big-time bust.

If my predictions come true, then the Jacksonville Jaguars will be a cellar-dweller for many years to come.

Kansas City Chiefs

16 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Not bad, but not good. Below average.

This is a tough one, as I have no clue who will be the Kansas City Chiefs head coach next season or for the next five years. However, I like what they're doing defensively, but it's just a matter of figuring out if Matt Cassel is their quarterback of the future.

All in all, there's too many question marks on this KC squad.

Miami Dolphins

17 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Not good, slim-to-none.

I do not believe that the Miami Dolphins will be winning a Super Bowl in the next five years—unless they can magically find an elite quarterback.

All in all, the AFC East is far too competitive with the New England Patriots, New York Jets and Buffalo Bills all showing signs of being successful in the near future.

The Dolphins will have a hard enough time making the playoffs.

Minnesota Vikings

18 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Not too bad. Average.

I really have faith in quarterback Christian Ponder, as I believe that he's the real deal.

If the Minnesota Vikings can infuse some youth on the defensive side of the ball as well as add a few more receivers for Ponder, then I can see a possible Super Bowl in the near future for the Vikings.

New England Patriots

19 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Very good.

The time is coming to an end for Tom Brady as a New England Patriot, so the time to win is now for Bill Belichick and the Patriots.

No matter how putrid New England's defense is, as long as Brady and Belichick are there, then they're automatic Super Bowl contenders.

New Orleans Saints

20 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Very good.

I am expecting a New Orleans Saints Super Bowl in the near future. Mark my words.

Drew Brees and Sean Payton are just that good together. I believe in the two, and I really like where this franchise is heading.

New York Giants

21 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Not great, but good.

If the New York Giants can return to having an elite defense, then I can foresee multiple deep playoff runs for the Giants in the next five years.

Eli Manning is playing at an elite level right now, and their offense looks to be as good as ever. All they need to do is get back to being elite defensively. It's that simple.

New York Jets

22 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Good, but not great.

To me, the only thing that is holding back the New York Jets from greatness is Mark Sanchez. If Sanchez can play a tad bit better and the defense continues to shine, then watch out for the Jets.

Perhaps one of Rex Ryan's predictions will come true in the next five years.

Oakland Raiders

23 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Above average.

This one all depends on Carson Palmer. If Palmer can play well, then the Oakland Raiders can make the playoffs. But if he's an elite quarterback, then the Raiders can win a Super Bowl.

It's that simple—that is, only if the team continues to play well defensively in the next five years.

Philadelphia Eagles

24 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Not very good.

I boldly believe that the Philadelphia Eagles are headed right into a depression. What the Eagles did last offseason will result in a complete and utter disaster.

This isn't Madden here. You can't just load up with talent and expect to win. It's about having a team that believes in each other, and I do not see that happening in Philly right now or in the near future.

Pittsburgh Steelers

25 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Very good.

The Pittsburgh Steelers always find a way to compete and win games in the playoffs, and they are certainly built to win right now.

In a five-year span, I think that it's safe to expect a Super Bowl or two out of Ben Roethslisberger and the Steelers.

San Diego Chargers

26 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Below average.

Philip Rivers is not a winner, and nor is Norv Turner. As long as those two are in San Diego, the Chargers will never win a Super Bowl.

In fact, the Chargers have yet to win a Super Bowl, so why should I think that they'll win one in the next five years?

San Francisco 49ers

27 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Pretty good.

I am a big believer in Jim Harbaugh, and I can see that he's up to something in San Francisco. The 49ers should be a winning team for many years to come.

To me, the biggest concern with the 49ers is finding a quarterback for the future. Is Alex Smith the guy? Is it Collin Kaepernick? Who knows—maybe that guy is still in college.

Seattle Seahawks

28 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Pretty bad.

I don't think that Pete Carroll belongs in the NFL, so why should I believe that he'll win a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks?

The Seahawks do not have a true quarterback of the future and have a bunch of no-names on both sides of the ball. Until that changes, they will never win a Super Bowl.

St. Louis Rams

29 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Not good.

This is bold, but I am going to predict that Sam Bradford is nothing short of a one-year wonder and a complete and utter bust. Yeah, you heard me correctly.

The Rams have a lot invested in Bradford and are locked up for many years to come. I just don't see him winning anything with the Rams, especially with the talent that they're surrounding him with.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

30 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Below average.

I don't see it happening, but I do believe that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be a competitive team for the next five years.

The Bucs are very young and talented and could win a few games here and there with quarterback Josh Freeman, but I just don't see a Super Bowl in the next five years.

Tennessee Titans

31 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Not bad, but certainly below average.

It all depends on Jake Locker.

Will he be able to win at the NFL level? Who knows? However, I actually believe that he will.

If the Tennessee Titans can keep a solid defense together and surround Locker with some legitimate wide receivers, then a Super Bowl could be in the near future—but that is, if Locker isn't a bust.

Washington Redskins

32 of 32

Super Bowl Odds for Next Five Years: Not very good.

I have no idea what Mike Shanahan is doing in Washington. I actually believe that Shanahan is a fraud and only won two Super Bowls because of John Elway.

As of right now, the Redskins have no quarterback of the future. That needs to change if they want to win.

I guess their odds ultimately depend on how well they draft in this year's draft. All I have to say is that if they do not find a legitimate quarterback and add some offensive firepower, then they will never win a Super Bowl.
