FC Barcelona: With David Villa Out, What Do You Think Barca Should Do?

Xoel CardenasDec 15, 2011

I got up at 3:30 a.m. local time to watch FC Barcelona go out and handle Al Sadd. Everything was going well until an Andres Iniesta long pass caused another concern for Pep Guardiola and the team, as well as all Culés. David Villa went for the ball, landed awkwardly and broke his shinbone. The video is not the worst image we've seen, but it's still pretty bad.

Now with El Guaje out for the season, it seems Barcelona should make a move. Or should they?

I'll give you a few options that Barça has, but this article is all about you, the fan.

Tell us, what do you think Barcelona should do?

Please comment and tell us how concerned are you (if at all), should they bring in a new striker or winger in the January window (if so, tell us who should come to the Camp Nou and why), or do they just not need to do a thing?

Villa Was Struggling Anyway, so It Doesn't Matter

1 of 5

Some will say that David Villa being out for the season is not a big deal because he was struggling this season.

This is not true.

Villa may not have been playing lights out, but he was always a threat to score. He did score five goal in Liga action and three goals in five Champions League appearances, and was always a challenge for all defenders in La Liga and in Champions League play. It is a tough loss for FC Barcelona, as well as for Vicente Del Bosque and the Spanish national team. Villa may not be available for La Roja's EURO 2012 run.

Saying Villa being out is not a big deal because of his struggles is ridiculous. Don't kick the man while he's down. It may seem like I am kicking him down by writing this article as well, but believe me, I am not. I'm just looking at it from a business aspect, the on-the-field business aspect of it for Barcelona. It's a business of winning, and it's nothing against Villa.

Should They Go out and Buy a New Winger or Striker?

It looked like Barcelona would not be active during the January transfer window, but now with Villa's injury, FC Barcelona president Sandro Rosell and Pep may be forced to look at possible transfers. One possibility is to try and sign a player they were considering bringing in this summer.

Some of the names you'll be hearing are Edinson Cavani, Sporting Gijon's Alberto Gotia (a former FCB youth product), Sevilla's Jesus Navas and Borussia Dortmund's Mario Goetze.

After spending quite a bit of cash on Alexis Sánchez and Cesc Fàbregas, don't expect Barça to go after any of these players, but then again, you never know if Sandro Rosell will panic and try to land a big name.

Don't expect Pep to panic.

What About Trying to Strike a Deal for Neymar?

3 of 5

It's a long shot, but could Barcelona call Santos and ask about Neymar? Both clubs' officials are in Japan for the FIFA Club World Cup.

Rosell went to the Copa America in July and was spotted (very publicly) with the Brazilian national team, some say to talk with Neymar about joining Barcelona in the future.

Neymar did sign an extension with Santos, so this will more than likely never come to pass. But money has a funny way of changing things. It would be a double win for the blaugrana, as they would gain an amazing player and taking him away from potentially signing with Real Madrid.

But I'll be realistic: It could happen in the future, but it won't happen anytime soon.

Transfers? No! Just Call Up Someone from the B Team

4 of 5

Maybe they don't need to do anything? Perhaps what they need to do is simply call up a player from Barcelona B and they will be OK.

It worked when they brought up Pedro Rodriguez, Thiago and recently, Isaac Cuenca. History indicates it is a good option.

Pep Guardiola wanted to bring in Barcelona B player Sergi Roberto as a full-time first team player next season, but now, his time may come sooner rather than later. Sergi has played for Spain's U-20 and U-21 national teams and was brought in for David Villa in the final minutes of the first leg of last season's UEFA Champions League semifinal victory against Real Madrid.

Other players, like Rafinha Alcantara (Thiago's brother) and Martin Montoya, could be called up as well. But Sergi Roberto has always been a favorite of Pep's and is the player most likely to get called.

They Are Plenty Deep, so They Don't Need to Do Anything

With Pedro, Isaac Cuenca, Alexis Sánchez and Jonathan Dos Santos, Barcelona could just do nothing and play with what they got.

Also, Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fàbregas are capable of playing the winger position.

And of course, Lionel Messi could be moved around to essentially any forward position when needed.

Personally, I believe the team will not (and should not) go out and sign a player. Too much money and not too many teams are willing to give up the players Barça may want. Sergi Roberto being called up full time would be just fine for Pep.

Again, I'm not going to downplay David Villa's absence. It's tough, and no one can replace his talents this season.

But this is a business, and business has to move forward.

Give us your opinion and comment on what should Barcelona do, if anything at all. Thanks.

Visca Barça!
