LSU Football: Latest BCS National Championship News and Updates
Here's a question that has been up for debate when it comes to this year's BCS National Championship Game: If Alabama beats LSU, should the Tigers still be honored as this year's No. 1-ranked team?
There are plenty of arguments going both ways. But each argument has its own valid points.
If Alabama beats LSU, both teams each will only have one loss, which came against one another. But in LSU's defense, they will have one more win than the Tide (SEC Championship Game over Georgia). Should a team that did not play in their conference title game really receive the No. 1 ranking?
Also keep in mind that when LSU did beat Alabama in the regular season, it did come on Alabama's home field. The BCS National Championship Game would come on a neutral site. If Alabama beat LSU in Death Valley, then it would be one thing, but that's not a possibility.
Another valid point for LSU's case is that they have a better resume. Not only would they have one more win, but those 13 wins came against a much more challenging schedule than Alabama's. LSU defeated both Oregon and West Virginia in its non-conference schedule this year. Both those teams are going to BCS games.
Alabama's biggest non-conference win came against Penn State, and after that, the Tide's best win was against Georgia Southern, which plays in the Southern Conference.
Sure, it would be a rare circumstance, and sure, it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense. The Tigers are favored in this game and you have to like their chances heading into the Jan. 9 BCS showdown, but if they do not beat Alabama, this is certainly something to think about.
More wins, better schedule, winning on the road.
Sure sounds like a convincing argument to me.
