Kevin Sumlin to Texas A&M: Can the Ex-Houston Coach Hold Onto A&M's Recruits?
After a absolutely horrible season under head coach Mike Sherman, many thought that the Aggies would lose some of their recruiting class.
Texas A&M has a solid recruiting class this year, with four players in ESPN top 150 and five players that are still considering the university.
In the last week, Texas A&M has fired Sherman, who finished with a 25-25 record and didn't win a bowl game. Then, they replaced him with highly respected coach Kevin Sumlin.
Sumlin went 35-17 at Houston, including a 12-1 finish this year. He is a great motivator and teaches discipline to his team while still remaining a players coach. He has what it takes to keep this recruiting class intact.
Sumlin also knows what it takes to recruit in a big market like Texas. He was the offensive coordinator or the Aggies in 2001-2002 under R.C. Slocum. He also worked with Bob Stoops in Oklahoma when they were pulling in some of the top classes in the country.
""We're going to hit the ground running," Sumlin said. "We'll be out recruiting this afternoon. We want to head into the SEC with one of the best recruiting classes in the history of the program.
"We're excited about going to the SEC and playing football. I'm not coming here to lose. I'm excited to be here, and I'm excited to work with these guys."
"
There is really no question Sumlin will be able to keep the recruiting class in check. Texas A&M is a great program that will be moving to the top conference in college football, and Sumlin is a fantastic head coach. He knows the area, and he understands the program.
Texas A&M will be in good hands heading into their new home.
